    InquiringMind,

You’re not the only one who wonders about this.

Actually, just the other day, I was discussing it with someone.

He brought up a point that I have yet to completely wrap my mind around – a more symbolic perspective of the story of Mary and Jesus.

Truth is everything – all, not just male, not just female, not separate opposites, but incorporating both sides of any extreme into a whole.

He theorized (along with others), that Mary having a child out of her spiritual desire & not from a wholistic (male/woman) manner – represents the source of how we got our dualistic ideas of this world of separation of “good” & “evil”, “light” & “dark.”

I see it a little like how Eve, seeing more of the big, integrated picture, consciously decided to disobey God & thus created some illusion/imbalance, so that something better can be brought about – all of us progressing here on this earth. Maybe both Mary & Eve, besides Jesus & others, are symbolic spiritual personfications of similar principles that we encounter – a way to explain the “veil” of illusions & somewhat of a guide in seeking what is best not just in the short run, but especially in the long run. We are each “perfectly imperfect” & are meant to not be paralyzed by being luke warm, but to really live with all our being & learn… by trial & error – active faith.

One possible way of looking at this story is symbolically – “All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them.” I’ve wondered, “did Jesus really think we needed to know historically how he was born, or was he teaching a spiritual lesson through a parable of birth?”

    1. Maybe the immaculate conception within Mary, represents the seed of faith that starts to grow within each of us. “The kingdom of God is within you.”

    2. Possibly labor Mary experienced is similar to the heart-wrenching soul-searching that Jesus endured in the garden of gathesemene – real spiritual & emotional “labor” to bring about healing all of those parts of us that we tend to shove under the rug over the years. In the process of healing, we recognize that each of us have similar potential for good & evil & we increase our capacity to empathize & love well.

    3. Maybe the birth of Jesus symbolizes being born again & again, somewhat like the symbolism of baptism. The gospel is about good news, which is similar to God, being the most active & dynamic verb of all: love. Learning to love others as ourselves, is a never ending process of dying to old unhealthy ways & being born again to new & better ways, “line upon line.”

A thought just occurred to me… if the Holy Ghost is an actual person who is separate from God, and the HG is the one who “overcame” and impregnated Mary, wouldn’t that make HG Jesus’ literal father?

I was listening to Catholic radio when they said that Mary is the daughter of HF, the wife of HG, and the mother of Jesus. Then they said that the Holy Trinity is a family. I thought this was cool in part because of the potential implications for our LDS family centeredness but mostly because it involves the 3 phases of womanhood with divinity – a concept that is conspiciously absent from most LDS references to the divine.

As a metaphor, I like it.

    From a literalist perspective….WTH?!?! :wtf:

    😆

It’s kindof like the movie, “The God’s Must Be Crazy” – you have to see it in a certain way to really appreciate it. :D

This is the thread about whether Jesus was a real, historical figure that I mentioned in InquiringMind’s new post. I am bumping it up for everyone to read and comment, if desired.

Here is a link to another thread that I think is interesting about Jesus:

    Was Jesus a Buddhist?” (http://forum.staylds.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=916&hilit=Was+Jesus)
