GuestIt’s not all as bad as it sounds, the youth speaker had a different topic and it was high council Sunday and who listens to those guys anyway?
The sister in between did a great job, though. She focused her thoughts on being friends, not judging, and even quoted Pres. Uchtdorf’s “It is not that simple” – tearfully, I might add. She told a story of being friends with a nonmember family where they used to live. She said they frequently had dinner and cook outs at each others’ homes, kids played together, and so forth. She once got a Book of Mormon with the intention of giving it to her friend and when she was about to do so she got the distinct impression she wasn’t supposed to. She also said the missionaries were in their neighborhood one time when this family was over and they felt they shouldn’t stop in for a visit. After more than a year of being friends with these people the woman confided in her that another neighbor had warned her to stay away from them because they weren’t really wanting to be friends and that they were really trying to convert them and when that failed they would just drop them. The friend told her how wrong they were and that she was the best friend she had ever had. Her family did not join the church, but they are still friends even though they now live in different parts of the country. She likened it to The Rescue in that the most important thing to do is to be friends, not judge, and follow your promptings even if they don’t make sense and they don’t seem to be moving toward the goal. She also related a story of her own family being inactive during her teen years and how easy it was to tell who was sincere and who was assigned. The individuals will make their own decisions, she said, about when and if to come back. I don’t know her well because her family came to the ward while I wasn’t attending, but her family appears to be pretty TBM. As a side note, I appreciated that she didn’t “know” anything – she did testify, but did not use that word once.

GuestThat sounds like a wonderful talk.
 I’m glad to read about it, since our first speaker said he had FIVE MONTHS notice and then proceeded to read a General Conference talk word-for-word – and it was one that I had chosen to ignore when it was given. I love my ward, but today . . .

GuestNot knowing her very well, I will say I was a bit worried when she began and announced her topic, Ray, and had the smartphone at the ready – but I’m glad I listened. I used the phone for the other talk. May 19, 2014 at 5:37 am #285133Anonymous
GuestThat sounds wonderful. It’s so refreshing when you hear positive messages like that. Sunday was a bit of a write off for me. I’m really uplifted by your experience instead.
