[cut and paste first para from elsewhere]

Just been reading CS Lewis’ Screwtape Letters… not quite what I was expecting (I’ve read a lot of Lewis’ Narnia books, science fiction and non-fiction) I don’t know if people are familiar with the book (it appears in one of U2’s videos of all places!)… but a young demon is getting advice from an older demon on how to lead a Christian astray… and one of the things he says to the young demon is “keep on impressing on him how humble he is”. The whole joke is that the more humble you think you are, the less you are… very Zen.

The edition I have is illustrated, with pictures of the demon Screwtape in it. Screwtape’s signature appears printed at the end of every letter. When he’s doing well, his signature is flowery. When he’s failed, it turns into a splodge.

Cool book. It’s been a long long time since I read it. I might have to go pick up a copy.

Nice quote from the book: The Screwtape Demon writes to his nephew:

There’s a reason some people call CS Lewis the 13th Mormon Apostle. I’m sure he’s been quoted more often in General Conference than any other Gentile since the founding of the LDS Church.

    Really good, thought-provoking book.

    That’s true.

Years ago, when I was involved in Pentecostalism, I used to be frustrated at the low brow nature of many Christian writers, as opposed to the dry, academic papers on the other end of the scale. I got given a book by CSL, “The Problem of Pain”, which I think I still have. It made me think about a number of theological issues deeply, without boring me to death or insulting my intelligence.

There’s one bit where Screwtape explains to his demon charge that humans are lucky to have bodies, and that they are just spirit. Which sounds very like Mormon theology!

    It makes me wonder…

Was Clive inspired by the Spirit with truth restored to the earth in the last dispensation? Or is it evidence Mormonism is not as unique in theology as we tend to think?

Were these teachings developing in society with or without the priesthood?

Or maybe some of our ideas are shared with other lesser known threads of Christian thought.
