I think I’ve seen him once but he wasn’t green. The eyes were the same but definitely not green.

About 15 years ago I got a call from Salt Lake asking me about my sister in law; where she lived, if she went to church, and other questions I can’t remember now. I happily gave them all the information I had, because it was SL. I have not idea if it was the Strengthening Members Committee or some other office, but I was more than happy to tell them anything. I suspect the committee could work in the same way.

GuestRebeccad, did your sister in law want to be found? When it appears someone has moved without a forwarding address, many wards send the records back to Salt Lake. I am aware they do try to locate where the person has moved in order to send the records to the new ward. Sometimes people want to move though and don’t want to be found. I have known a few folks who did that. In this case, I can see why Salt Lake wants to locate someone. This other committee, I am not so sure about.

GuestSeveral months ago I watched a local news program on Mormons, highlighting Mitt Romney’s religion and the “Mormon Moment.” I guess I should say at first that I don’t live in the US — this was a foreign (from the US point of view) news program. During the program, a few ex-Mo brought up the Strengthening the Members Committee and described it as others on this post have. The TV presenter then interviewed Elder Holland and asked point-blank about it. Elder Holland tried several times to twist off the line, giving evasive answers, but the interviewer was dogged. Finally, Elder Holland simply said words to the effect of “I’m not a member of that particular committee, so I don’t know too much about it.” He looked about as comfortable talking about the subject as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I wasn’t necessarily saying that it was this committee, my point was that I was eager to be helpful, and so told some random person on the phone all they wanted to know about my family member, without questioning really why they wanted to know, or if my family wanted the information shared.
I could see the SMC could use the same strategy pretty successfully.
