GuestI read this quote from Gloria Steinham — women’s advocate. “The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off”. I think she was a bit impolite in that use of language, but I thought I would let it stand as its part of the meaning. The subject line of this post being a more genteel version.
Any comments on this? Does it strike you as true, particularly as you confront true realities? What limitations does it have?

GuestYes, I agree with the quote – at least with regard to most people who have to adjust their current view of truth in order to adopt a new view. For people who aren’t as set in their view of truth, it’s not as much of an issue – but I think everyone believes in at least one core truth that, if viewed completely objectively, really isn’t “TRUTH”. For most people, pointing out an instance of where their truth actually isn’t true is seen initially as an attack, and attacks don’t cause warm and fuzzy feelings of love and acceptance.

Guest[ Admin note: Also, just for the record, there are some words and phrases that I think all of us can agree aren’t appropriate for this site – given the wide ranging sensitivities of our readership. I’m not sure “piss you off” is one of them, but I appreciate the attempt to not offend some people. It’s a good habit to cultivate, as long as it isn’t taken too far. The last thing I want here is a bunch of “flipping, fetch, oh my heck” references. That drives me nuts. ]

GuestI agree completely. So many instances in my life, not only religious, this has applied. When I first started learning new and surprising things about the church and church history I got very angry. That was kind of my first reaction. I think it’s that way with a lot of things. But now I do feel more free. -
