I just got off the phone with a tired and wise Bishop. I hold a Stake calling. Last week assignments were passed out to each ward for events after the first of the year. The Bishop called to tell me their ward will not be participating. They will announce it and if ward members want to come they can. Otherwise they will let this one and another one pass.

He went on to explain how tired and worn out his members are. As a Bishop he has cut back mutual to just twice a month. They have pared back every meeting they can. Most of their ward is made up of two breadwinners per family. Just getting them to church on Sunday is his only goal. Everything else is optional.

I was dang impressed. I wish we had more local leaders who felt courageous enough to do this.

I think this is an important lesson bishops need to learn. Many families are beyond stretched these days.

I’m sure there are many wards like this and there are some bishops like this. Then there are the bishops that aren’t.

What a fantastic story of a bishop taking proper care of his ward family. Seriously wonderful.

Also, how great is it that you were the one he talked with, mom3?? I want to give you kudos, too, because you helped validate and support him while he does something atypical. Thanks for the story!

Excellent catch DC – I hadn’t made the connection. But yeah. It is cool.

In a way his call validated me. We aren’t the church of the pioneers anymore. The community of The Great Basin people is really hard to maintain as you get farther away from the armpit of Zion. I would love to have wards and Stake more autonomous. Keep as Sabbath Sacrament Service, but all the rest is appendages.

I floated for an hour after he called. I think our SP is self contained enough to not rain down on the ward. A bonus for them in my opinion.

Thank you for sharing this. I paraphrased it and used the story as a positive example to illustrate an effort to keep the responsibilities of life in balance for one of my Pathways assignments.

I like how he was up front with you about it. Too often, people say “yes” and then don’t do what they said they would do. At least now you now where his Ward stands, and can adjust expectations accordingly.

    Hurray for this Bishop!
