I was leaving the gym this morning and Postum popped into my head. It’s been nearly 40 years since I’ve been in contact with the brew, but when it flashed through my head this morning it was accompanied by images of it’s past use age in my family. Do you remember Postum? Do you have any lost LDS throw backs? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it. I am in my mid 30’s so that might account for it. Heard of it – both good and bad stories; never had it. Other lost LDS throwbacks?
Road shows – also with good and bad memories.
I remember it and liked it. I drink Pero currently which is basically the same thing. Great stuff (if you like bitter barley drinks) Speaking of throwbacks, anyone remember that old Mormon musical “My Turn on Earth”? A friend had a tape cassette of the songs that we listened to a few times. It was kind of a poor man’s “Saturday’s Warriors”. I thought it a bit lame even as a kid.
I love Postum! It’s great on a cold evening, just as an herbal tea is great. My parents always had it in the house. It is still available on amazon.com, and I have some in the house right now. Unfortunately, they only sell the original flavor, not the coffee flavor (that really didn’t taste like coffee – more like cafe au lait). I remember Postum. We used to have some, and there was some recipe DW used to make that called for coffee and she substituted Postum. They stopped making it for awhile. We had an older sister at the time in our ward who had been baptized a few years before but had a hard time without coffee. She was very upset when they stopped making Postum and passed away in the time when it wasn’t being made. I remember “My Turn on Earth” as well and agree it was of the same theme as Saturday’s Warriors. While the tunes were somewhat catchy, I don’t actually believe either of them as doctrinally sound – but maybe they’re not really supposed to be. How about the “I’ll Build You a Rainbow” short film & song? Talk about emotion instead of the Spirit!
My parents used to have Postum sometimes. I loved it. When we were investigating the church back about 1979 somehow we were discussing our household furnishings with the missionaries. What we called a coffee table they called a Postum table. Things that seemed to have gone away.

On my mission, I had a companion with a filmstrip projector that he had purchased. It was a great way to get past the door at investigator’s homes. (VCR’s were just coming out). He had the filmstrip version of “I’ll Build You a Rainbow”. I must have seen that played 50 times. There were actually two versions of that film: the first version had a scene at the end where the dying mother’s face is super imposed over a rainbow. The second version (wisely) ends with the family in front of the temple. It was definitely a purposeful way to get people to associate strong positive emotions with the Church. I only saw the temple one. I agree that the message of eternal families is great, but it was not explicit in the story. I also know missionaries and others who played on the emotion, tying it to the Spirit. Even then I recognized that was wrong.
So back to the throwback – do any of you remember speakers in priesthood session that were not GAs? They were usually athletes who would appeal to the youth. Frankly, I liked it, but it hasn’t happened in a long time.
I LOVE Postum…not because of the taste, but because of the nostalgia. I remember being sick and mom bringing me Postum and toast. I was sad they stopped selling it. Other throw back stuff…I remember ward 4th of July parties with cases of Shasta soda (caffeine free, because caffeine was of the devil).
I also remember scout camps with marathon nights of playing with Rook cards.
I also remember in primary getting those long cloth boards I had hanging on my wall and when I passed off memorizing Articles of Faith there were these really cool clear like buttons I could put on my cloth chart. I can’t remember what those were called. But they were awesome.

I still have mine from being a “Merry Miss.” Wow, that sounds so weird now. I remember we had embroider a motto or something on it. Mine is horrible.
I remember “Super Saturdays” when the youth from the stake got together for some fun activities. I suppose they had some lesson or objective. I just remember them being super fun.
I’m going to write a song called “I remember postum”…just kidding. I used to drink it a lot, and then switched to INKA in Canada which is about the same thing.
