“Tithing settlement” was coined back when many members contributed in kind or with money from annual sale of livestock, produce, etc. It literally was a settlement of an on-going account. The term should have ditched long ago when the general payment structure changed.

I agree and my interest in church history stems from trying to understand why things are they way they are. I know I’m always tooting Terryl Givens’ horn and I’m about to do it again. I think most people are most familiar with his works like The God Who Weeps and All Things New (great books, and co-authored by Fiona) but he also has many more “scholarly” books that focus on church history and culture.
