GuestIt was Dry Council Sunday. I had a miserable cough so I was hanging in the hall – when the following quote (attributed to “A President of the United States said,”)was read by the HC. It made me smile. Quote:“Hope is not blind optimism. It’s not ignoring the enormity of the task ahead or the roadblocks that stand in our path. It’s not sitting on the sidelines or shirking from a fight. Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it, and to work for it, and to fight for it. Hope is the belief that destiny will not be written for us, but by us, by the men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is, who have the courage to remake the world as it should be.”
I was pretty sure I knew who said it. By George – Google supported me. The quote is from Barack Obama.
All the rest of the day, I was humming, “There is hope smiling brightly before us…..”
Like rain to sun drenched world.

For me that was the key point.
He sheepesed his liberalism. Two words into the quote I knew he was referencing Obama. But he knows we are a conservative, republican leaning church, so he couched it with “A President of the United States said,”. To me it was double sheepese because he wasn’t quoting a GA type or typical LDS dude.
He maybe the designated “liberal” on the HC. He has facial hair. In a kind of artsy, actor way. Like Viggo Mortenson style. He is young. He explained in his introduction that his dad is some renown Mormon historian. His wife is History Major and teacher. He is an artist by trade.
The icing the cake for me was the quote. It’s not typical. And I liked it.

GuestI love it. I miss the days when our POTUS could speak in grammatically correct, complete sentences. (Sorry. Couldn’t resist.) 👿 My son makes it a point in his church talks to reference sources that are . . . unorthodox. His favorite right now is quoting Tupac (with an explanation that he is editing to remove “some colloquialisms”).
😆 When he does, there always are at least two or three members who look up quickly and smile.February 19, 2018 at 6:42 pm #327001Anonymous
