GuestWell, maybe not practising? Is this another one in the long list of surprising celebrities connected with the church? February 10, 2011 at 7:02 pm #239772Anonymous
GuestI was surprised to find out Katherine Heigl was raised LDS. February 10, 2011 at 7:43 pm #239773Anonymous
GuestI heard Amy Adams was also LDS, but not practicing. February 10, 2011 at 7:57 pm #239774Anonymous
GuestKatherine Heigl speaks fondly and positively of the Church. She just says that she likes to party and swear too much to be active – but she says it with a smile. My favorite “Mormon celebrity” story is Rick Shroeder’s conversion story and his continued activity. It’s a cool story to read.

GuestSeriously — party kid Ricky Shroeder? 😮 February 11, 2011 at 5:06 pm #239776Anonymous
GuestOther odd ones – * Aaron Eckhart (he even served a mission), maybe that’s where he got the idea for “Thank you for Smoking” from.
* That guy out of New York Dolls.
* Alice Cooper – albeit in a small sect.
* “Roseanne” – although she calls herself Jewish, which probably goes down better in Hollywood.
Usually these lists contain a bunch of folk I’ve never heard of. Presumably they’re famous in parts of the States. I mean, the man who played “Daddy Warbucks” – seen the film, wouldn’t know the actor… The Famous Mormons site is geared almost entirely to American examples.
We don’t have many famous LDS round here, but I happened to find out a well known musician here, “Mr X” was a former member, he just happened to drop it into a conversation he was having on TV. He doesn’t even mention it on his website, but I asked around, and it turns out that “Sister X” in my ward is his mother, which I might have worked out, since they share a surname. Mr X helped build our meeting house apparently! But he hasn’t been an active member since the 1970s.
p.s. I’m glad you mentioned Katharine Heigl, that’s actually who I had in mind. I confused the two names as they both have German sounding surnames.

GuestThis girl was in my ward when I was going to high school. We went to the same school together, and early-morning seminary. Shows as a regular character. She does small parts now and then on other shows (House, Ghost Whisperer, etc.). It sounds like she is still active. I just about fell out of my chair when I first realized she had become and actress. I was watching “Providence” and kept thinking she looked really familiar. Then it finally hit me.

GuestHere’s one you might find surprising. This murder case was made into a New Zealand film “Heavenly Creatures”, by Peter Jackson (he of the Lord of the Rings trilogy)… the story had overtones of lesbianism and was about the murder of the mother… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parker-Hulme_murder The Hulme half, Juliet Hulme, went on to reinvent herself as crime novelist Anne Perry, and went to live in England, where she ended up joining the LDS.
“She has written more than 30 popular mysteries set in Victorian London, seven million copies in print. “At first, I gave the missionaries such a hard time, because there were some things I couldn’t accept, but now I can’t remember what they were. I really can’t… I got down on my knees before I went to bed, and I asked my Father in Heaven if it was true or not, and when I woke up in the morning, the room was absolutely filled with light — and I don’t mean sunlight.”

Yes, I don’t know the name, but would probably know her if I saw her.
I was watching that
Town Called Eureka– even though I don’t recognise the names, I know the guest actors from a dozen other shows and films. February 11, 2011 at 7:23 pm #239779Anonymous
GuestAnne Perry’s books are AWESOME, if you like murder mysteries set in Victorian England. Incredible cultural detail and really cool plot twists. It probably helps that she was a convicted muderer . . . 😆 I’ve known she is Mormon for a long time, but it always surprises people who know her books – and especially her background story.

GuestWell, I’d heard of Anne Perry, and I’d heard of the murder case, but I never realised that they were connected (she changed her name) and never realised she’d become LDS. She denies that there were any lesbian undertones in the strong friendship she had with her conspirator, Parker, but Parker’s diary suggests otherwise. The Peter Jackson film makes it pretty explicit, but as to whether that happened… p.s. Still think Alice Cooper is the coolest, even if he was a Bickertonite!
