I came across a conference talk today given in 1978 by Howard W Hunter. It had some really nice thoughts.

    Quote:

James then very pointedly defines what he refers to as pure religion, as distinguished from forms of ritualistic worship and iron rules of practice as described by Paul. James said: “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27). The wording is simple and unpretentious, yet the meaning is profound and has deep significance.

    Thanks for sharing, Flowerdrops.

James 1:27 is one of my favorites, and one I quote often to my kids when we need to step back from all the demanding practices and rules of the organized religion…and remember the foundation Christ taught. I feel better as a parent when I see my daughters volunteer at assisted living places or hospitals…not as part of a youth activity, or to pass off a YW requirement…but they just feel they want to make a difference and they do it on their own without telling people outside our family.

Yes, I think this is pure religion. Great quote from HWH, Flowerdrops.
