Hey! I like that! Still out in two hours and a much crisper set of meetings. Then reserve the 3rd hour for presidency/bishopric/BYC stuff…give everyone some life back.

To be honest…The church could cut back on a lot of teh leadership meetings too….seems so many of the meetings are held just because the handbook says so….

I’m liking this … two hours of church, one hour of all the other stuff. That’d be great.

we do PEC for 1/2 hour every other week and we do ward council on the same day every other week for an hour…… that way all can come in with their families (except Bishopric) at least 2 or 3 weeks a month

When I was active…we had two hour church.

    40 minute SM

    40 minute SS

    40 minute PH/RS

sometimes SM was 20-30 minutes. It was awesome.

In PEC I proposed exactly what ray mentioned…because we didnt have enough teachers…every other week for SS and PH/RS. BP agreed, but SP said it violation of CHI.

Oh yeah, Bishop what would I do with an extra hour? The same thing I do now that I am “less active” and have 3 extra hours on Sunday.

Cook breakfast for kids and jwald…fried potatoes and eggs and toast….then i stoked up the wood stove and we all sit around on the couch in pajamas and watch TIVOed Colbert and John Stewart and Seinfeld and Cheers episodes.

This is not hypothetical…it is fact.

Sometimes the word of God ought to be administered with a big stick.

    That’s all.

This would be a sensible compromise. Many schools have lessons that are 40/45 mins long approx, and there’s good reason for that. The average adult attention span is something like that…

Oh, and another thing… do small children really have to attend sacrament meeting? There must be some way that they can partake, but without having to sit through it. It’s incredibly boring for them, and distracting for us. The Quakers don’t make children sit through their meetings.

Posting because I just complained about 5 hour church in another thread. :D

To me there’s so much overlap in what gets taught in SS and PH/RS that it borders on redundant. SS will use stories from the scriptures to teach a specific gospel principle and PH/RS will… use scriptures (and modern day prophets) to teach a specific gospel principle. Sometimes it’s even correlated such that the same gospel principle is taught in both SS and PH, in fact sometimes the teacher from one of those classes will reiterate something that was discussed in the previous class. I’d vote to cut out one of those meetings.

I remember vividly as a convert and I’m reminded each time I’m on exchanges with the missionaries.

    Missionaries: Church is three hours.

    Investigator: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

Missionaries: Will you come to church?

Investigator: “Yes” (not on your life).

Yes, I could certainly go for a reduced block – ideally two hours. I agree that SS and PH/RS are enough alike that one could easily be eliminated and I actually think there is support for the idea in the highest echelons of the church – but there are also those there who won’t let go of the sacred cows. Personally, I’d like to keep SS and eliminate PH/RS and perhaps relegate them to a monthly weeknight or perhaps even Sunday evening event. I could also go with just eliminating SS – I’m not that picky because they do seem redundant.

We’ve moved around a lot and lived in 5 different countries, so we’ve had every combination mentioned here. For about 3 months in our current ward, they were repaving the parking lot and redoing the landscaping. We have 3 wards in our building (stake center) so we only had SM – for 3 months! IT WAS AWESOME! It was so hard to go back to 3 hours when they were done.

I wish we did it the way they do in my MIL’s church. They go for a 1 hour service and then everyone stays after to eat and socialize. They have different service groups that meet at differing times during the month to plan out the service they’ll do. THIS is what I want to do!

Sounds like you know what to do… tear up the parking lot and rip up some bushes. 😈
