I was trying to be optimistic.

I wouldn’t say the meeting was “unprecedented” regarding information.

    :-)

    Optimism. I’m envious.

Ps…I would love to know who you are. You willing to send me a PM?

I just sent you the same message 15 times or not at all.

Optimism is nice. I am probably due to read Pollyanna again. Hope is one of those things I have had to learn to strive for.. I do love my version of the gospel and try to mix it in with the church part.

    Meh.

That about sums it up. The ‘historic meeting’ netted out with:

    – more time on social media

    – less time tracting

    – guided tours of the chapel

I’d have to say that the call I’d want the least right now is WML. Not because of this change but because I’d struggle to find any motivation to try to convince people to join a church I barely believe in myself.

Nice approach. I’m struggling a little with that. I feel like the gospel in my head is fine. Then I spend 3 hours at church on Sunday.

I no longer attend church on Sunday, instead I attend 3 hours of meetings, and I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.

I love Primary. Maybe that is where it is at? I attend meetings-crazy long Ward Councils, Stake Leadership, Sacrament Meeting. Primary never feels like that for me. I also don’t feel like I am indoctrinating. We (awesome level headed counselors) try hard to make sure we are not, when they go home that is another story.

Not at all. Do you have a question on how to use the PM feature, or is it a technical glich

Try clicking on my name, and look for the prompt to “send private message” Make sure to hit “submit” and not save.

I noticed you deleted most of your post, so I deleted it out of my post where I quoted you. I suspect you are not wanting to risk getting outed…and I don’t blame you.

I believe a glitch. You really would have received 20 of the same message. I think it just went through for real.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Sometimes I get in the frame of mind we all believe this way and remember we don’t. Sorry to get off topic everyone.

To me the ideas of giving missionaries iPads to try to communicate with investigators online and having them wait around in Church buildings to see if people show up out of curiosity sound like gimmicks that won’t make much of a difference over the long-term. The real problem is that the basic product they are trying to sell (I.E. the idea that prophets know the most important answers, strict obedience to traditional Mormon rules and routines will make you happy, heavy sacrifices the Church asks for will be worth it, etc.) has not really changed or improved much in a long time and will only appeal to a very limited number of people nowadays for very long no matter what creative or aggressive methods they use to try to sell it.

With these recent changes and the missionary age change it looks like Church leaders are desperately trying to find any shortcuts they can to change the symptoms they don’t like to see and get around having to face and deal with the real underlying problem that an increasing number of members/investigators are just not very satisfied with the same old doctrines and overall environment the Church provides at this point. Trying harder or trying new ways to sell the same basic thing is not going to change the fact that many members simply do not like the meetings, callings, being told what to do in so much detail, etc. At least some of this could easily be improved even from a TBM perspective simply by what they focus on the most but instead it seems they want to rely on things like marketing tricks, the commitment pattern, etc. to continue to sell the same old thing at all costs.

That is not close to what was said in the meeting. Just saying.

Sorry, but I have a different opinion about primary and indoctrination. I look at the text for all of the primary songs and think there is a LOT of indoctrination going on that bubbles up in the “testimonies” that kids bear every fast sunday in my ward that goes exactly like this, word for word, and yet I don’t know of anyone who TELLS them to repeat this formula, so the kids must be getting it from the other kids:

“I’d like to bear my testimony. I know the church is true. I know Joseph Smith was a prophet. I love my mom and dad. . . ” then some variation before the closing.

The formulas come from somewhere. Is this how missionary work is supposed to work too?

What exactly did they say then (at least the main points) for those of us that don’t want to listen to the whole thing? I’m sure they must have said a lot more than this in 2 hours and maybe they worded things differently such as something to the effect that missionaries will use the internet to find people to teach and it was too bad some people have tried to visit LDS Churches only to find them locked so now they will make more of an effort to welcome visitors as a missionary tool. I just heard some of what they said in the news and some background information about pilot programs they have been testing leading up to this and these two general points were the only things that sounded significantly different from business as usual to me.

Regarding Primary songs…..entirely different thread. I have strong opinions on that one and wonder how much experience you have serving in Primary.

I wonder how much trouble they will have with bored missionaries or ones who find a way to chat with their friends on Facebook. I worry that the WML may become a babysitter.

They basically said we are grasping at straws here people give us a break 😆

I know someone here will probably calm me down, but I’m concerned about the Facebook component of this effort. Some people, even some young people, don’t want anything much to do with Facebook. They certainly don’t express their innermost thoughts there. What if a missionary doesn’t have a Fb, doesn’t want one, doesn’t want to have their heartfelt conversations out there for every grade school classmate/neighbor/shirt-tail relative/ex-girlfriend’s little sister to see? What if it’s not the missionary’s personal style (and it never was, even before the mission) to post church-related videos every eight hours? If it’s what I’m imagining this could be, it feels a little coercive towards the missionary him/herself, and that’s not even getting into how the good folks at Facebook would feel about this. (Again, if “this” is what I’m imagining it could be.)

And it doesn’t feel like what Pres. Monson and Uchtdorf urge us to do – have face-to-face, real-time, personal, natural and sincere interactions with everyone in our sphere. I actually really enjoyed the video from Pres. Monson’s old talk. I came away from that clip with memories of our struggling branch in the 70’s. Come on, everyone, let’s build something good together!

I already admitted in the posts above that I will probably go to my grave having never invited anyone to hear the missionaries. I hope I will have lived a life of love and service. But I guess that’s not really enough?

I think I’m also feeling a little chagrined at church media as a category lately. There’s a video up now depicting a couple. The wife is severely disabled (looks like she’s post-stroke) and the husband has an obvious tremor. It’s just one person’s reaction, but I think the word maudlin fits. It’s not a real couple, of course. And while we use actors to portray Christ and everyone else, it feels like they crossed a line with this video. And dreamy piano music doesn’t make me more comfortable with crossing the line.

    Okay, I’m done.
