A few years ago the church leadership encouraged wards & stakes to have a Stake Day of Service. It was often in September or October. Initially it got lots of press. My Stake set ours up to coincide with our county’s Patriot Day – 9/11 Community Service Day. As a county and a church it was really neat. One day out of the year was a big push to do valuable things. Cleaning parks, harvesting from community/church gardens, painting over graffiti. It worked really well. Then last week during our meeting we were told the Day of Service was cancelled with the idea that instead of a single day, we do multiple day events as Stakes/Wards/Families. Just Serve is there for ideas and options for people.

I’m curious to know what people think. I’m working on this in our stake. It’ll be interesting to see if we can generate the same “turnout”/commitment when the projects are ongoing and off the radar. It’s going to take some real reconfiguration, but I’m looking forward to it.I have hopes for it. Yes, configuration will be needed, but the past few years I have spearheaded my wards projects and it has grown tremendously. People get excited to help. They generate good ideas. And even bring more ideas to the table. We announced a few on Just Serve. I can’t firmly commit that it made a difference, but word of mouth did. I believe its all in the enthusiastic presentation.
