GuestTom asked about the use of “TBM” here. I don’t like the acronym, since I believe it is pejorative and derisive in origin, and I like “traditional believer” much better. What do you all think? Do you feel like this is a stand we need to take – or not?

Guest“Traditional Believer” is a great term to use for an orthodox “Member” of the LDS Church or a “Mormon.” But … then we’re right back to abbreviating it as TBM

I don’t know if we can require people to type out the full words. Internet chat culture is about speed of communication and brevity.
To me, it is a pejorative only in the context of the DAMU where it came into existence and is most widely used. But that is only because of the context. Those people mostly don’t like members who still believe

Tom? I love Tom, but he is a bit of a squeaky wheel. I totally accept if you say you don’t like the term Ray. But Tom is far from “TBM.” According to him (from over at the OM boards), he no longer attends LDS services and goes to a UU congregation. I am not sure why he is so attached to defending that abbreviation.

GuestYeah, I know, Brian. My comment was more to appease him and talk about it than to do anything about it.
I am totally fine not taking any official action – but maybe you could consider writing a short post about how we talk about others and mention how we define “TBM” as “traditional believing member” here?

GuestAs long as we keep the forum discussions positive so they are not bashing “TBM”s, I’m ok with it. I don’t like it when it becomes a negative label, as if we are better then them or something like that. Traditional Believing Members should be respected, and in many areas of the gospel, many of us are.
I honestly don’t know how we’d enforce not using it, more just moderate to keep in line with the mission of the site and keep it positively used.
Those are my thoughts.
