GuestThis sounded to me like it could fit in our mission statement – “meeting people wherever they are”: “If I will esteem mankind to be in error, shall I bear them down? No. I will lift them up, and in
theirown way too, if I cannot persuade them my way is better; and I will not seek to compel any man to believe as I do, only by the force of reasoning, for truth will cut its own way. …In reality and essence we do not differ so far in our religious views, but that we could all drink into one principle of love. One of the grand fundamental principles of Mormonism is to receive truth, let it come from whence it may. …And if by the principles of truth I succeed in uniting men of all denominations [or worldviews] in the bonds of love, shall I not have attained a good object?” HoC 5:499 “I do not dwell upon your faults, and you shall not upon mine. Charity, which is love, covereth a multitude of sins, …we should cultivate a meek, quiet and peaceable spirit.” Hoc 5:517
I think it helps to position orthodoxy and unified thought into culture instead of doctrine. Michael Ash’s book “Shaken Faith Syndrome” got me to this quote. His book is actually very favorable to developing a mature, more nuanced faith that can deal with imperfections in leaders and scripture, etc. I think he or any scholar or member who really digests the material in his first 5 chapters shouldn’t have a problem with our mission here. We deal with members emotional journeys more than anything else.

GuestGreat quotes, Orson. August 5, 2010 at 2:18 am #233834Anonymous
GuestWhat a great quote! I wish we could hear this quote at church as often as we hear quotes about how important it is to pay tithing, be chaste, not wear multiple earrings, etc. etc. August 5, 2010 at 5:58 pm #233835Anonymous
GuestI find it interesting things evolve from: Quote:we could all drink into one principle of love
to
Quote:I can love you as long as you don’t have more than one pair of earrings

GuestThese quotes were used in a fantastic Sunstone article, one of my all-time favorites. I attached a copy “The Grand Fundamental Principles of Mormonism.” Actually, the author Don Bradley registered at our site a couple months ago. I was really psyched when I saw that, and we traded a couple of emails. I really need to remember to contact him to see if we can host his article here on the site. It’s location on the Sunstone website is weird and hard to link to, and it has changed a few times in the past. August 8, 2010 at 1:43 pm #233837Anonymous
GuestDon Bradley gave a very interesting presentation at Sunstone yesterday, “Dating Fanny Alger”, a bit of a play on words. He seems like a really interesting person. August 9, 2010 at 5:22 pm #233838Anonymous

Brian, that is one of my favorite articles as well.We discussed this a while back on this thread:

GuestHe is user “donbradley,” but I don’t think he ever posted any comments. I think he saw that we were talking about his article. -
