GuestHeber, are you done with the book? I’m about 2/3 through the book, and I don’t know if I will have it finished this week. I know it will be the source of a tremendous amount of blog materials already. (I just finished the Bickertonite chapter.) July 28, 2010 at 4:43 pm #231873Anonymous
GuestNo, I haven’t finished it yet…I don’t know if I’ll get it done this week either…but I’ll try. August 23, 2010 at 3:41 am #231874Anonymous
GuestOk, the next book is a little long, so let’s give everyone about 6 weeks or so to start. It’s David O McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism. I know it has some very interesting chapters on the Civil Rights movement, and David O McKay wrestling with the Blacks and the priesthood issue. I’ll plan to post something around the 1st of October. GuestIs anybody interested in continuing this book club? Here’s the schedule of books that we had hoped to read. Do any of these interest anyone? Would it be good to switch up the order? Blacks & the Mormon Priesthood – Marcus Martins
Have a Little Faith – Mitch Albom
An ancient American setting for the Book of Mormon – John L Sorenson
Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible & Why – Bart Ehrmann
Massacre at Mountain Meadows – Richard Turley and a few others
Infidel – Ayaan Hirsi Ali

GuestMy vote is Blacks and the Priesthood first…I ordered it and it’s a short book we can read quickly (and discus not so quickly )
Then I would like to read War and Peace from Tolstoy …. Just kidding
I would like the Mitch Albom book, that has been on my list for a while. What say ye?

GuestOk, we can do the Blacks and the Priesthood book, and then let’s go with the Mitch Albom book. I’ve been trying to find the Blacks book in the library, but I may buy it because it is inexpensive. I did read a review that it wasn’t as historical as a reader would have liked. Marcus Martins is Helvecio Martins son, so it may be interesting to hear his perspective. I did a post on Helvicio about 6 weeks ago: http://www.mormonheretic.org/2010/08/30/helvicio-martins-first-black-general-authority/ -
