Site traffic doubled yesterday, from around 700 visits to nearly 1,500 people/visitors (counts IP addresses). It will be interesting to see how today goes, now that the news of the news article has been circulating for a hole 24 hr period.

GuestCool that the site is getting some attention! Well done, Brian! May 25, 2012 at 3:51 pm #252806Anonymous
GuestI’m not sure that our goal for this forum should be to get more attention. IMO, it should be to help members struggling with their beliefs.
The people will come to this site is by word of mouth.
I know that since I’ve been here I’ve told others about it.
Thanks for your help everyone.
Mike from Milton.

I’m here as a result of the news article. Word of mouth is a good idea. However in this case word of mouth won’t work for some people. Within the LDS culture it’s “not cool” to put it lightly to express doubts. I think there are many who are silently have a belief crisis and don’t know where to turn. So this site having more exposure probably means the opportunity for more people to be helped by it.

Well said, bc_pg. It’s not about the publicity, it’s about the chance to help more people who are struggling.May 26, 2012 at 2:15 am #252809Anonymous
GuestI appreciate the concern, Mike (seriously), but one thing we’re not is publicity whores.

More publicity means more people know there’s a place they can turn for help. But, yes, publicity for its own sake would be counterproductive.

GuestThe thread at lds.net is pretty funny. Its called “the world is watching us” or something. As expected, most faithful are calling it another anti article by the post.
A couple comments about how disturbing the article is and that BJ would call himself a Mormon yet not believe the BOM…
Some guy asked about the alien not responding to the thread , and I want to shout “that’s because you
banned me.” Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk 2

I’m sure these things can be genuinely disturbing to some members. That fact alone can make the “big tent” ideal difficult in practice, but it’s not a huge enough hurdle to make me stop trying.

GuestQuote:Church officials say the growth of the sites does not point to a corresponding growth in the number of Mormons leaving the church, whose membership has burgeoned to more than 6 million inAmerica. “Those leaving the church are a fraction of 1 percent each year and it is a trend that is decreasing rather than increasing,” said Michael Purdy, a church spokesman.
http://www.staylds.com/However, said another spokesman, Michael Otterson,“anti-church groups . . . have become more aggressive and outspoken.” And the church has acknowledged on other occasions that it has had difficulty retaining young Mormons, in particular, and has generally lagged in dealing with doubt — perhaps the largest challenge not only to Mormonism, but also to modern organized religion as a whole.[/url] is not contributing to people leaving.Quote:I don’t feel like the Anti church group portion of the quote really fits in with the spirit of this article. It kind of suggests that we are an outspoken aggressive site.If they had cut that part out and left the rest I think it would have been fine.May 27, 2012 at 12:55 pm #252815Anonymous
GuestGreat job, guys! I do think this reporter’s angle seemed slightly more negative than that one we talked to about 2 years ago IIRC. But it was probably because we are in a political cycle right now which is driving interest so people want controversy. As for the commenters, two thoughts: Brian is right about the qulity of comments on news sites due to no moderation and wide distribution, and secondly, haters gonna hate.

You see, I don’t get this, at all. I actually called Michelle and thanked her for being fair and not making this an anti mormon article.
But, like I read on lds.net and the comment section, many many many members DO see this as a one sided bias anti mormon WP article. So let me ask then, what is so “negative” about it? What is anti mormon about it? Someone help me out?
Is it anti because it is not the typical FAITH PROMOTING thing Mormons want to read?
I mean, yeah, my family will certainly classify me as apostate, which is nothing new and I have nothing to lose. What are they going to do? Call my Stake President 700 miles away and get me released from my callings and get my TR taken away?
But what about all you out there like Ray who tell stories about how great your wards are and how open the people are to questioning and nuance views? Are they going to see this as an anti attack?
I see it and the whole staylds website as a way for people who are in trouble and spiraling through a faith crisis, to perhaps find a little bit softer landing at the end of the day. That is what the site did for me.

GuestOkay, this comment posted yesterday, pretty well sums up the entire problem of the LDS church. This is what my family says and what I hear so so many members say. (bold is my emphasis) Quote:kennewick87

This is the worst, most one sided article I have ever read regarding any religion.
It takes a few disgruntled individualsand states out of context their concerns about items that are minor parts of mormonism, practices done away with long ago, folklore, or just plain false. Most people leave the church because they can’t live its teachingsand rather than feel guilty, they leave. Which is ok. Sometimes I have a hard time living the Christ’s teachings and don’t feel like going. But I repent, try harder, do my best knowing Jesus Christ will make up for my short fall. However, some people, once they leave the church,
get bitter and become so overly sensitivethat they feel people treat them poorly or shun them which is more of a figment of their imagination and paranoia than anything. I have been a memeber of the church for 43 years and I have never seen anyone shunned or treated in anyway other than with love and respect. People who leave are welcomed back at any time. Members of the church reach out to them in service and friendship. There may be a few member wackos who don’t understand the teachings of Jesus Christ and poorly treat those that leave, but the church has never taught anything other than love, tolerance, service, and kindness. And this includes gays, lesbians, ex-mormons, adulterers, liars, criminals, male, female, elderly, young, blacks, whites, you name it.
The LDS church teaches people to be good people, to love their neighbor, to service in the community, to be kind and caring.
It is “Come as you are”, “Do your best”, and “We are all in this together”.The church is a great place for most and if you don’t like it and it causes you grief or pain you should leave and try life on the outside. It’s not for everyone. If, at some point you feel like coming back please feel free to do so. I have thousands of LDS friends, family, and acquantainces and I would guess that 99.9% of them feel the same way I do. Again this article is a jokek and perfect example of the media’s issues with religion but specifically mormonism. You would never find an article like this about another religion. You could easily take out the word mormon and replace it with catholic, protestant, or jew and you’d get many of the same comments from disgruntled, angry and bitter people who had a bad experience with those particular religions. Why not have another article that talks about the millions of satisfied members of the church allowing people to share their testimonies and why they are happy being inside the church and living its teachings. Oh that wouldn’t fit the liberal, anti-religion agenda of the media. However you all can go to mormon.org and see hundreds of normal people sharing their positive experience with Momonism.
Yep. I am SOOOO glad I called Michelle back and gave a statement. No sir Kennewick87, all is NOT well in Zion.

yes, i am glad you shared. i guess we few disgruntled individuals are only dealing with minor parts, like logic and reason, or practices done away a long time ago, like the 14F and blatent bigotry against gays, liberals, and democrats, mixed in with a condescending 1950s worldview of women.not a problem.
such comments, unchallenged, leave the impression that staylds is anti-, which i know has been hashed through already here. i suggest that we might respond to some of these, where we aren’t banned, to correct the view.
