I don’t mind having an orthodox point of view here, especially when it gives us a chance to address that kind of view for the partipants and lurkers. I think the key is being able to model the kind of interaction we want from those who have those views.

He flirts with the line, but I think he appears, at least, to be making an effort. His comments generally aren’t as bad now as they were initially.

Fwiw, with the caveat that I cannot and will not attempt to diagnose from the postings here, I have wondered if watcher is somewhere on the Autism Spectrum. Just a thought. His latest comment about his upbringing is fascinating. He certainly comes across as somewhat emotionally detached, which fits his handle here and would explain his apparent difficulty understanding the emotional/spiritual issues expressed by most of our participants – including the core concept of a faith crisis, since his orientation appears to be analytical and certainty-based, as opposed to spiritual/faith-based.

Before I respond to you Ray, I moved another post to the parking lot. It’s not overtly political which is why i didn’t outright delete it (since he was just warned). It does very much flirt with the line though. My fear is allowing this post opens the door for someone who likes to get very close to the line. Also, he doesn’t present a dilemma or issue with politics that is affecting his relationship with the church, in which case it might match the mission of the forum.

I have had that thought Ray. He’s old enough that he would have been undiagnosed as being on the not-yet-defined spectrum and others just would think he was an odd duck. Even his military experience fits. No diagnosis from my part either, just saying it’s possible he’s just an odd duck but it’s also possible it’s more than that. It would be very interesting to talk to someone in his ward.

Good call. How they can think that post is appropriate . . .

Watcher posted on the thread about the church’s recent stance in support of the bill protecting SSM in federal law.

His post was that he is suspicious of people that claim that they didn’t choose to be the way that they are but that he can respect that people make their own choices (even poor choices) and live with the consequences.

I deleted his post. This left my post as the last one on the thread. I modified my post to say that the thread had run its course and was being locked.

I sent him a PM explaining my actions.

I don’t think that Watcher’s post was necessarily worse that Inquiring mind’s or SD’s. It was just the latest on that thread after we had already warned that the thread might need to be locked.

For me Watcher’s posts of late have just gotten too long and wordy. I do appreciate the intro he did and it’s insightful. But I will likely miss stuff in his longer posts just because I have neither the interest nor time to read. Just saying.

    Same.

I have tended to skim very quickly. However, I think it might be because this tends to be a more analytical group at times than most groups in this general category.

I removed a sentence from watcher’s post on the % rates of porn use thread.

He speculated that increased ubiquity of porn (that he feels is now imbedded in regular media) might contribute to transgenderism. He called it “gender confusion.”

I added a moderator note in replacement of the sentence I had removed that the sentence was speculative, offensive, and frankly unrelated to the remainder of the post.

I think this kind of action will be quite common. I really think he doesn’t understand social cues / issues very well.

I think there is a somewhat large minority of people, especially those a bit older, who have been taught their entire lives that being gay is a choice. This applies to other things we don’t understand very well also, including transgenderism. Watcher seems to be part of that group. There are likely others who come here who believe likewise, they’re just savvy enough not to say it.

Watcher posted in the recent thread about only the celestial course of action being sustainable and his belief of everything under the LGBTQ umbrella being unsustainable. I did add a moderator note to add context to where watcher is coming from and also a warning that arguing or divisiveness will lock the thread. I do not feel that the line has been crossed quite yet but depending on how Carburetor responds, I could see it going downhill fast. I am hopeful that he will ignore watcher entirely.

Anyway, what other action should we take to help ensure the rules are kept and the environment remains productive?

I think you done good! Of course I understand our point of view so your note is clear to me but i think it’s pretty straightforward. Thanks. And you’re right, i think Watcher is pretty much restating what DHO has said. I and others disagree with that point of view but Watcher and others agree. (I can’t help that they’re deluded! :P )

I think we keep an eye on it and as you warned if it gets out of hand we take action.

That said, as I alluded to I have been quite busy traveling and tending to some family obligations and that continues through next week. I’ll do what I can but I am having periods of not visiting as often as usual and sometimes reading but not having the time or energy to comment.

    periods of not visiting

You just described my last few months.

Things are settling down now, so I hope to check in more often.
