Wondering if you can expand on that….it seems that in life in general, this is the way it works. When you interview for a job, you sell yourself and are on your best behavior, and often, excited to go above the call of duty. Then, a lot of people get used to it, and reduce their engagement, effort, and sometimes get resistant to management on certain issues. And if you set the bar lower than it is at the intake point (baptism), it is harder to increase it later. Better to expect the reasonable best from people at the outset in my view. But I’m open to a different perspective…

GuestI can’t directly answer for Ray, but I agree with what he says. The baptismal interview questions seem to me to be more probing that the temple recommend questions to begin with. Members who are baptized at 8 are not really held to the same standards – they can have had ongoing issues with the WoW, tithing, or even chastity or homosexuality and still be members (although perhaps not active or not holding a TR). The baptismal questions even ask directly if you believe Joseph Smith restored the church and if you believe the current president is a prophet. I’m not saying we should just throw the doors open, but maybe we should – we are a repair shop, after all. I’ll sit next to the guy who smells of alcohol or tobacco. I also think the question about rendering service to other members would just read others. That said, I see your point SD and don’t really disagree with that either. The church does seem to be looking for commitment as opposed to just cheeks in the seats.

GuestI just wanted to throw in here that I have been reading and I’m finding it interesting, especially in the absence of some things I expected to see. -
