GuestOral sex is not a sin – based on the definition I gave of sin. 😳 😆 January 14, 2011 at 5:39 am #238539Anonymous
GuestHeber, Where is the Uchdorft quote from? LOVE IT!!
As to “what is sin?” Well I don’t know but I like the definition of it being anything that pulls you from God’s presence or His presence in us (Our true selves). And while I know that the word is steeped in guilt and shame I like to think of it more as a learning tool.
For instance, I yelled a lot today at my kids. They pulled some real crazy making stunts today but ideally I would have handled the situations with more patience and love. God in me or my true self most certainly would have. BUT I sinned and yelled, causing my youngest to cry and not making the situation any better, taking me away from God’s presence for a bit until I realized where I was at, calmed down and reset.
As for WoW stuff I think sometimes breaking the WoW can pull you away from you true self. Addiction can anyway. The moderate use of beer for instance probably doesn’t but the pack and a half a day of cigarettes just might. I see the WoW as a setting apart from society. It makes us (LDS) different and that is mostly the point of it and to keep those who would struggle with addiction away from it. Is it a sin? Using my definition, it depends on a lot of different factors.
Let’s take double piercings for another example. Why are you piercing your ears twice? An artistic device, a rebellion against the prophet, an ego stroking act, or you just want to experience what it feels, looks like etc.? Totally depends on your heart at the moment I think. Tatoo same thing.
I don’t like all the perceived commandments we have in our LDS culture which is probably why I like my definition the best.
My 2 cents.

GuestCG, I like your definition too. A definition by examples. Great examples. January 14, 2011 at 9:51 pm #238541Anonymous

I wish you hadn’t used that example. I hate that one. Unless you come from a different planet, I don’t see how you could possibly get two piercings😮 😮 😮 without it being at least partially because you’re thumbing your nose at the prophet (which I think is not inappropriate in this case). Of course I’m not much into fashion, so what do I know?January 14, 2011 at 11:05 pm #238542Anonymous

However, where is the need then for faith, if you can always see the consequences clearly? What if a sin has eternal consequences that we can’t clearly see now vs a sin that only has a 2 yr impact on my earthly existence? Would it not be worthwhile to consider eternal consequences, even if they take more effort to try to understand?I can not believe there is such a thing as a sin that has eternal consequences greater than the consequences we face here. If God is going to hide the eternal rewards and consequences from us and then at some point say see what you missed because you did not do A B and C. Well I say that is a petty God. So I believe it is best to live your life for this existence and not worry so much about the hereafter. Something tells me if you do this with honesty and compassion you will be just fine in the next life.

GuestI really like the concept central to Mormonism that the next life will be nothing more than an extension of what I become in this life – that it only is a “stage” in our eternal progression. I think that should give us hope, especially if we think of our discussions of Fowler’s Stages of Faith. -
