GuestAnyone else watch the CES fireside Sunday? Elder Uchtdorf spoke on “what is truth” It said to me that they are trying to open the minds of the general membership. Lots of talk about listening to opposing views…not just believing leaders, etc. A little in the middle I sort of questioned but the rest was good. Wondering if anyone else has thoughts?

GuestI have listened to most of it. I really liked when he talked about just because someone believes something is true it doesn’t make it so. From what I heard, it sounds like he was trying to get people to accept maybe some unconventional church things as the truth. It’s kind of hard to say what his motive is. From where I stand it seems like he coming from a direction more in line with what we here are all about. I think the church is changing and we will see more and more of this kind of talk. Him and elder Bednar were put in at the same time and thank goodness he’s in the 1st presidency instead of Bednar. We need more men like that and women too. GuestJohnh, if ignore my post on the support thread. I’ve found it
Will the talk be available as a transcript? I missed it first time round.
Thanks.
Was Uchtdorf called after Bednar though? Same time, but second in line as prophet?

GuestWow, excellent talk! I was a little confused by some of his comments, but most sounded like what we regularly talk about here. In fact if I didn’t know better I would have thought he has studied our writings here for most of his material! 😆 Quote:Because we “see through a glass darkly” we must trust in the Lord who sees all things clearly.
I know this is the goal, but we see the Lord’s workings and hear Him through that same dark glass – so as we desire to trust in Him and his clear vision we still must recognize that our interpretation of His will may be distorted – so we must continually ask are we trusting in the Lord or in our imperfect interpretation?

The online video is here:
http://www.lds.org/broadcasts/watch/ces-devotionals/2013/01?lang=eng&vid=2093631404001 This is one of those talks I think the church wouldn’t want in writing. There is very much a spirit of “Know truth through your own manifestation” and the “Listen to others who believe differently because you can learn from them” message……much different from the “Just follow the bretheren” we are used to hearing.
He seemed pretty animated too. There was a quick “party line” portion in the middle of the talk that seemed to me more of a “better say this to keep me out of trouble” series of statements. I definitely felt like he is a closet reader here (which I am sure he isn’t…it was just I felt a bit of a connection there).

GuestI LOVED this talk. I haven’t found a transcript but I did transcribe my favorite part. (Which came just after the throw-this-in-to-keep-President-Packer-happy part). Quote:The invitation to trust the Lord does not relieve us from the responsibility to know for ourselves. This is more than an opportunity it is an obligation my young friends, it is an obligation, it is one of the reasons we are sent to this earth.
Latter Day Saints are not asked to blindly accept everything they hear, we are encouraged to think and discover truth for ourselves. We are expected to ponder, to search, to evaluate and thereby to come to a personal knowledge of the truth.
Brigham Young Said; “I am afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not enquire for themselves of God whether they are led by him. I am fearful they settle down in a state of blind self security.
Let every man and women know by the whispering of the Spirit of God to themselves whether their leaders are walking in the path the Lord dictates.”
We seek for truth wherever we may find it.

GuestI know! I want to get a blue church shirt with this printed on the back….when someone says something I will take of my leather jacket and turn around for them to read 👿 January 15, 2013 at 10:36 pm #263502Anonymous
GuestThe bottom line is to “beware when confronted with information that is contrary to the revealed word of God.” And be reminded that the blind man will never be able to describe the whole truth of the elephant. What’s the difference between “information” and facts? And exactly how do we define “revealed word?”

GuestI thought he had some great points. I shared the link with my wife. This is what she found most resonating…
Quote:For those who already embrace the truth his primary strategy is to spread the seeds of doubt. For example he[The Devil] has caused many members of the church to stumble when they discover information about the church that seems to contradict what they had learned previously. If you experience such a moment remember that in this age of information there are many who create doubt about anything and everything at anytime and everyplace. You will find even those who still claim that they have evidence that the earth is flat. That the moon is a hologram. It looks like it a little bit. And that certain movie stars are really aliens from another planet. And it is always good to keep in mind just because something is printed on paper, appears on the internet, is frequently repeated or has a powerful group of followers doesn’t make it true. Sometimes untrue claims or information are presented in such a way that they appear quite credible; however, when you are confronted with information that is in conflict with the revealed word of God remember that the blind men in the parable of the elephant would never be able to accurately describe the full truth. We simply don’t know all things. We can’t see everything. What may seem contradictory now may be perfectly understandable as we search for and receive more trustworthy information. Because we see through a glass darkly we have to trust the Lord who sees all things clearly.
Sigh…she still believes that I am being deceived by Satan and anything conflicting with things taught in current chruch is “Anti lies.”January 16, 2013 at 12:17 am #263505Anonymous
GuestI don’t disagree with what he said. What I’m hearing is don’t believe everything you hear or see. Find out for yourself. You can see it on this forum although not as much as on other forums. How many rumors do you see that are false but they support what one wants to believe so they get passed on as truth?

I almost felt both staylds and militant apologists would be able to quote different parts of it.

My view: “information” is anything that we hear which may appear to be credible, “facts” are verifiable. I am confronted often with information that is contrary to the revealed word of God, sometimes in church.
“Revealed word” is defined by what the spirit communicates to your soul. It can’t be what the spirit communicates to your neighbor or leader, at least not revealed to
youunless you also receive the confirmation of that message. I don’t know how anyone can claim anything different, either it has been revealed to you or it hasn’t. It is vital to our humility that we remember the blind man will never be able to describe the whole elephant, and that we are all blind.
