This is political so I don’t dare post it in the public forum. Also I recognize that there are many Trump supporters that visit our site and that it’s very bad to start to view people that hold different opinions as being wrong or deficient but…

what the hell is wrong with people?

This makes it harder to associate with the church. Especially where I happen to live. You’d think Christ was a jingoistic, screw you, I’ve got mine, homophobe.

I believe many of my Evangelical friends believe he is.

I am a lucky girl. I have a hand full of courageous liberal friends in my ward and Stake. It helps a ton.

I live in a solidly red state, but the members here are surprisingly diverse and more liberal than in the western states.

Honestly, I think it is tied completely to polls finding more Mormons to include who live in the Mormon corridor. I believe the percentages would be quite different if the Mormons being polled lived in the more eastern states.

It baffles me, as well, but I also think many people who supported him passionately can’t face the results of their choice. They can’t admit they elected a narcissistic, immature, clueless, racist, tyrannical con man. (Truly sorry if that offends anyone here, but it is how I see him.)

It goes back to an observation I’ve made on here in the past. People believe they put religion before politics but they really put politics before religion.

On the other hand, I think there are many conservatives that support Trump because they are single issue voters (abortion).

I think our country could benefit from an education campaign aimed at helping people understand that if we successfully got rid of Trump, Pence, not Hillary Clinton, would be president.

Or they just like the guy. There’s always that.

I am not sure. I agree they think they like him, but what they like is something different than he is. I say that because I have family who are Trump Supporters. Trump comes behind Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Robert Jeffress, etc.

Voters have been trained to see Trump as the fulfillment of the talk radio, and evangelical pastor’s salesmanship (Sarah Palin, too). Trump actually couldn’t care less. His ego just needed to be President. He found a group that he could sell oil to and it worked.

The voters can’t see that.

I think it was just jarring to find out that I was in a religion that has the highest Trump approval rating.

Though looking at the numbers the Mormons are only 1% higher than white Protestants, which is pretty much what Mormons in the USA are. They’re polling about the same in their demographic, white conservatives.

I’m a bit surprised at the alleged support among members as well. Like Mom, I live in a more liberal state albeit with a higher population and fewer Mormons. I honestly only know one member in my ward who is really a Trump supporter and some even openly admit they are registered Democrats. I count myself lucky to be in a ward where political talk is minimal. The same can’t be said for some of the wards I visit.

That said, I live in a very red part of my blue state (in reality only NYC and Ithaca – which is part of my stake – are true blue). Most city folk would probably consider my neighbors (and probably me) rednecks. You know what I hear on the street? “Hell yeah, Trump’s sayin’ like it is. Why the hell are we takin’ people from those shitholes? They’re just taking our jobs or gettin’ welfare.” These types of people are his base, and they’re the ones who don’t regret voting for him. My theory is that CNN actually got Trump elected because every stupid word he said while campaigning and every stupid thing he says (or Tweets) now is all over CNN all day – and the people at the doughnut shop are eating it all up and agreeing with every word he says.

I’m in a traditionally red state but in a populated area of the state. Populated areas tend to be more liberal that rural areas, a real country mouse, city mouse dynamic. That said, the church attracts conservatives, and conservatives are over-represented in my ward. I’m thinking many liberals “become offended” and move on, meaning the core active Mormons represent the more ultra-conservatives of the general membership.

I’ve got family members that are deep in the Trump camp. Thankfully we don’t talk politics but that’s left me in the dark as to the appeal the man has. All I see is that he’s taken off the governors for people that have had to suppress their opinions in a more politically correct environment. He “tells it like it is” but doesn’t like being told like it is… like most people I guess.

Frankly, I think they polled intentionally to include Mormons, which probably meant they focused on an area where they knew they would get Mormons: Utah.

I also think I think they probably polled an older sampling, in general, which would have skewed the results significantly.

Finally, they probably divided up the pool of potential Mormons into rural and urban areas (for “diversity”), but that ended up meaning they over-polled rural Mormons in Utah – and those are exactly the Mormons who would be most likely to approve of him and his performance, not because they are Mormon but because they are relatively poorer, relatively less-educated, relatively older, white, rural voters.

I grew up in that sort of area, and MANY of my friends never left it. The large majority of them are hardcore Republicans, while the large majority of my friends who left the area (even only for a few years before returning) are not hardcore Republicans.

I might be completely wrong in those assumptions, but I know enough about national polling to think it probably is accurate.

Here comes my conspiracy theorist side.

I’ve thought this since I saw the headline. We are getting set up. For what I don’t know. My dark side can get really scared. My less dark side thinks it will drift away.

There is no way that poll is anywhere close to accurate. Largely because he won before he hit Utah/Idaho. He carried Southern States. Southern States are Evangelical. His number one religious endorsement came from Pastor Jeffress, who hates/despises Mormons and Muslims. Trump didn’t need Utah. He barely courted them. His moment with Mitt was a Republican Ploy.

Moreover the Republican Party isn’t dependent on Mormon’s either. So something is up.

I also believe CNN boosted Trump.

Trump survives on attention. Whatever and However he can get it.

For me I am wary. I am keeping the poll tucked in my pocket as the next few years proceed. This may have nothing to do with Trump.

I find comfort in telling myself that 1) He will likely only be a one term president 2) This country has survived bad and even corrupt presidents before 3) much of what he has done has been through presidential order that can be reversed by the next president 4) I believe that Mr. Trump will grow very wealthy – however lots of people make money through cheating the system. It is not fair but it is nothing new.

In short, this too shall pass.
