I remember one quotation years ago where a GA said “a parent would rather see their child buried than have them subject to a sexual violation or moral transgression” (i’m paraphrasing, but the gist was that being buried was preferable to some form of sexuality outside of marriage, I’m not sure the exact kind).
I remember being taught this damaging idea as a child and young woman. Much like the baptism of infants, this teaching is a mockery of God’s mercy, charity, and power to heal even the most broken of us. If the worth of the human soul is no greater than a perfectly unsullied life, then God wasn’t thinking very clearly when He set up a progressive period based on growth through opposition. Thankfully, even for the brother who spoke this untruth, God’s plan not only makes an infinite and eternal allowance for error, but often depends upon our transgressions to introduce His children to their own need for a Savior. Or, as Paul (and Lehi) taught, the “law” gives us a consciousness of our of guilt.
The authority who uttered this contemptible teaching has, I hope, been introduced to greater light and knowledge since he erred so publicly and with such widespread effect.
