I have often heard over the pulpit that we are to return often to the temple to ”renew our covenants”.

When we return though, we are doing ‘proxy’ work. I find nothing in the verbiage that says that we are renewing the covenant for ourselves. Does anyone know what the doctrinal basis of this teaching is? It seems to me that it is more like reminding us of our covenants through the repetition of the proxy covenant for others.

The only doctrinal instance of “renewing our covenants” that I can think of is the weekly Sacrament ritual. The renewal aspect is explicit in the prayers.

I can see how proxy work reminds us of our own ordinance experience, but it doesn’t renew anything, not in a theological sense. I think those statements are made by people that are confusing and conflating the Sacrament concept with proxy temple work.

    I agree with Ray.

oooops! I think I may have just opened up a wormhole in the fabric of phpBB-space. If Zuul emerges from the rift, in the form of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, it IS the right time to cross the streams.

    Fire at will.
