Here’s kind of cool link I saw on NOM. It’s one of those goofy tests to see which religion matches your belief system. Don’t know how accurate it is, but it seems to fit my beliefs pretty close.

    http://www.beliefnet.com/Entertainment/Quizzes/BeliefOMatic.aspx” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.beliefnet.com/Entertainment/Quizzes/BeliefOMatic.aspx

    Here are my results.

    1. Mahayana Buddhism (100%)

    2. Neo-Pagan (97%)

    3. Unitarian Universalism (89%)

    4. Hinduism (84%)

    5. New Age (82%)

    6. Liberal Quakers (74%)

I took that one time, thought it entertaining. I don’t know why it didn’t rank the LDS church higher for me, guess it sees the church in a different light than I do.

I took the test this weekend and ended up with Liberal Quaker as 100% and 37% LDS. Uniterian Universalist was second. I thought is was interesting to read the synopsis of each religion. I think they got LDS beliefs correct. What is funny is that my dh took the test and came out liberal to mainline christain protestant 100%, liberal quaker next and LDS 84%. So though he is more TBM than me he still doesn’t fit 100%.

I took the test with my VERY NOM BIL (as in doesn’t attend but still considers himself a cultural mormon) and we had a great philosophical chat til 2am. It certainly opens up the lines of communication. Though I can see it causing strife among family members if they aren’t open to differences of opinion. My BIL scored 60%LDS. My dh joked that now he was really in trouble if his inactive, beer drinking younger brother scored higher than his wife. We laughed but I worried a little that there was some truth too it.

Oh? Just because I’m bored silly, I retook the test and answered the way I was taught and brought up to believe, and the way I would have answered 10-15 years ago, and the way I would guess that most my family members would have answered. It worked. Here are the results.

    1. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (100%)

I don’t trust these things, on one test I came out quite high for Hinduism, which I’ve never had much time for (although strangely I don’t mind Buddhism so much). Also, it listed religions I’ve no time for such as Scientology (steer well clear, please, it makes the COJCOLDS look like a synch) and neo-Paganism (which is very neo, and very nonsense. No one ever called themselves “pagan”, it was just a name for non-Christians, and anyway, it’s almost entirely a modern invention.)

I think the answer is not to go for a pop quiz like this, but to actually read up more on the various religions. And there are decent shortish books which will give you an overview.

Also, Orthodox Judaism is not exactly something you just walk into.

Yes cwald, I wrote in partial jest – but I think it’s a good point to think about. The church can be to us what we let it be. I think that last test shows your skills though!

I never would have guessed this:

    1. Mahayana Buddhism (100%)

    2. Unitarian Universalism (96%)

    3. Neo-Pagan (94%)

    4. Liberal Quakers (91%)

    5. Hinduism (86%)

    6. Baha’i Faith (83%)

    7. New Age (82%)

    8. Reform Judaism (75%)

    9. Theravada Buddhism (75%)

    10. Jainism (72%)

    11. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (71%)

    12. Orthodox Judaism (70%)

    13. Orthodox Quaker (69%)

    14. Sikhism (68%)

    15. New Thought (63%)

    16. Islam (62%)

    17. Taoism (56%)

    18. Scientology (52%)

    19. Secular Humanism (51%)

    20. Nontheist (48%)

    21. Seventh Day Adventist (46%)

    22. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (45%)

    23. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (43%)

    24. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (33%)

    25. Jehovah’s Witness (27%)

    26. Eastern Orthodox (22%)

    27. Roman Catholic (22%)

I wanted more choices or multiple choices on most questions. I wonder what question/answer put the JWs ahead of Catholic on this?

Fwiw, I think the test answers reflect the commonly accepted “norms” of each religion. When I answer according to what I perceive to be pure Mormonism (what I actually believe), I always score lower on LDS and higher on Universalist Unitarian and Buddhism. However, when I answer according to how I would explain my beliefs in very simple terms to someone who might not be able to understand the nuances, I score much higher on LDS.

That doesn’t bother me nearly as much as some people, since I am fascinated that so many people who classify themselves as Mormon (even “faithful Mormons” and “traditional Mormons”) score so differently on the test – and I have talked with quite a few active Mormons whose scores really are all over the range. That is another indicator to me that Mormons really do believe quite differently among themselves.

Exactly, I was surprised that I scored so high for Islam and Judaism and I didn’t even know that Quakers were still around and different enough from most Protestants to deserve their own category. I guess it shows there are a lot of beliefs in common between completely different sects and traditions. However, I think a bigger factor than trying to match a set of specific beliefs if you are looking for something different than what your parents taught you is simply whose story you believe or not and why (how strong are the reasons for and against?).

In my case, I just like the story of Jesus, Paul, Peter, James, John, etc. much more than that of Muhammad, Moses, Joseph Smith, the Buddha, etc. On the other hand, I have put up with the Church for a long time mostly because I was born into it and I liked the other members so maybe the origin and doctrines are not always the most important consideration as far as feeling comfortable with a specific religous group.

DA -your list surprised me. I am very surprised that you have Protestant/Christianity as two of your top four picks, as well as the Judaism being high. But I guess, your explanation makes sense of it some.

I am also surprised at your list to Orson. Not because of the order, but merely because it mirrors my own. I didn’t know we had so much in common. 🙂 The first three are the same on both lists, I found it interesting someone else on the board has a neo-pagan streak in them. Hell, be careful though at church this week, they’ve burned people for less.

What is neo-paganism? I had no idea Buddhism would rank so high. As I said I wished I could select “all” the choices that I agreed with, on most questions it would have been a majority. Guess it goes to show my chameleon-ish tendencies. 😳

Edit: Okay after reading a little on neo-paganism at Wikipedia I think that test is off-base. Maybe the Belief-net server is on drugs or throwing results out randomly. Maybe I misunderstood some questions or answers. I don’t see myself relating to neo-paganism as Wikipedia describes it – other than the part saying they “are extremely diverse, with a wide range of beliefs.”

I tried to be as honest as possible and answered strongly against some of the ideas based on a nearly literal interpretation of the Bible such as the Genesis creation account, hellfire and damnation, homophobia, and even answered that I didn’t think baptism was absolutely necessary (I see it as providing symbolic meaning for the individual). I guess it’s getting to the point where many mainline and liberal Christian churches don’t really care that much about trying to interpret the Bible literally in every case. Of course, if I had answered these few questions differently I probably would have scored 100% mainline-to-conservative Protestant instead of 78%. I think my Judaism scores were higher than the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox scores mostly because I didn’t put a lot of weight on the idea of the incarnation of God or the Trinity and didn’t like the idea of confessing sins to clergy.

I think I will just make up a new religion based on my beliefs. What will it look like I am not sure. I will get back to you shortly.
