Exactly, I was surprised that I scored so high for Islam and Judaism and I didn’t even know that Quakers were still around and different enough from most Protestants to deserve their own category.

Very much so, the Quakers have a big place here. Some of them are very vague in their beliefs, but they value silence in worship and pacifism amongst other things.

Maybe it’s possible for some religious groups to be too vague to the point that they’re not compelling and people don’t really care about them as much as some of the more popular sects. However, I like the idea of vague beliefs for religious groups in many cases because it seems like they are easier to defend and they give people more flexibility to have their own specific beliefs on an individual basis. If a religious group wants to make all kinds of dogmatic assertions and rules about specific details then they better be right or at least something a lot of people can agree with because if not they are going to face a significant amount of resistance over the long run.

Some Quakers and some Anglicans are very vague, but I think for me, the thing that the Quakers have over the Anglicans in this regard is that their meetings are unique, very meditative, and lay a lot of emphasis on personal experience. With the Anglicans, there’s too much of the repeat-after-me stuff in a pseudo-RC package. Anglicanism is hemorrhaging members like nobody’s business, and no wonder. That’s just my take. Quaker worship is different, that’s for sure.

Talking of vagueness, I must admit that’s one reason I don’t find high Unitarianism very compelling. Once one gets to that point, it’s as well to stop going to church, it just becomes a bad social club.

More on Quaker worship here. I feel it is quite similar to our ideas of “reverence”

I’ve taken that test many times over a long period, with Hinduism, Jainism, and Quakerism coming up on top consistently, and LDS appearing near the bottom. Today I took it again, and it says the following. I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same. I really am LDS, and I say so everywhere I go. But I do love the Bhagavad Gita (Hinduism), Non-dualism (Buddhism), the Quakers, and my local Unitarian Universalist congregation:

    Quote:

    1. Hinduism (100%)

    2. Mahayana Buddhism (93%)

    3. Jainism (91%)

    4. Liberal Quakers (83%)

    5. New Age (81%)

    6. Theravada Buddhism (81%)

    7. Unitarian Universalism (80%)

    8. Neo-Pagan (77%)

    9. Baha’i Faith (75%)

    10. Sikhism (73%)

    11. New Thought (68%)

    12. Taoism (67%)

    13. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (65%)

    14. Reform Judaism (60%)

    15. Scientology (56%)

    16. Orthodox Judaism (54%)

    17. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (54%)

No surprise to me. I think StayLDS/NOMish types are almost always going to score high in the Buddhism, UU, and Neo-Pagan classes. I’m thinking they align with the ration/idealistic mindset.

Indeed. I noticed a lot of us scoring high on those. The problem is, they are socially and culturally very foreign to Mormons (westerners in general). I can dig a lot of their deep ideas. Really I can. But in the end, their cultural baggage is heavier than the crap I already deal with in my own religion :-), or at least I am used to the weirdness of my own and know how to deal with it.

There’s a beautiful Hindu temple in Atlanta. Amazing architecture! I dig some of their ideas, and visited the place a few times for contemplation. I am probably ignorant of the full practice, so excuse me in advance for my impressions. I just can’t see myself praying to, and offering sacrifices to the statues of the past teachers (their “prophets”) for that group there, or washing this other statue with sanctified water once a week. I am not saying that to make fun. I totally respect what was going on. But it was so alien to me, it didn’t connect. Does that make sense?

I could sit in that beautiful building to pray and meditate for a long time. I loved the vibe. But I know I would have more intellectual problems being a “member” of that religion/community than the one I am already in.

    26. Secular Humanism (35%)

    27. Nontheist (25%)

These are my scores… Like I say, I think if you’re at all interested in these religions, read up on them.

I think some of these are nonsense, e.g. Orthodox Judaism, which as I say “is not something you can just walk into”. For a start, you have to have your foreskin removed. That’s not something you can undo. As a largely inherited religion, life is not easy for converts (at least male ones).

“Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants” – yes, maybe, but I did try some of that before coming back to the LDS. Liberal Christianity can be annoying in certain aspects, mainline too dry. Depends who you’re with.

Scientology is not something I’d ever consider as it is evil.

Also I find it strange how Taoism comes down at #24, because I have sympathy with some of it. Probably not the specific stuff about the nature of God(s), but there you go.

It would depend when you asked me some of these things. If you asked me in 2010, or 2009, or 2008, you’d probably get different answers.

This list surprises me because I thought you had been re-converted to full TBM beliefs a few weeks ago.

I just realized I have not posted my results here, so, my careful answers first – then my answers when I changed two of them to choose one of the answers instead of marking “not applicable” or “none of the above” and changing the importance of the answers to medium in most cases:
