    Quote:

The world is like an impermanent resting place

Where all things just simply come and go

He who sees something come and never go

    has seen old age,

and he who sees something go and never come

    has seen youth.

In everything, I see the face of my beloved.

In everything, I see the glory of my God.

He who sees the creator in all created things,

he is one who has truly seen God.

An Urdu poem, put to music by the group Niyaz in their song “Dilruba.” I don’t know who the poet is originally, but it is very Rumi-like. This type of poetry really speaks to me the past couple of years. I don’t know what it is about the sufi thinking in the persian/afghan region of the world centuries ago … perhaps I lived a past life there ;)

BTW, when you see the word “beloved” spoken of metaphorically (or even literally) in a romantic way, they are speaking of God. It is a notion of being in love with God, like a lover, not sexually, but with passion like that. It’s a real edgy side to Sufism I find provocative.

I think we see God’s glory, we see evidences of God, we see examples of God’s work…but not actually see God.

Do you mean in general, as in all of us, always, as a rule? It seems to me the scriptures, especially the LDS canon, are full of invitations to see God’s face.

I actually carried on a conversation with a practicing Whirling Dervish a few years ago on a mystic group web site. Fun.

If we nominated comments from this site for a Niblet, I would nominate HiJolly’s comment. Cracked. Me. Up.

Sometimes, truth really is stranger than fiction.
