I saw this article linked over at Times and Seasons and it affected me profoundly. Mainly, it reminded me of what I value as a member of the LDS Church. I think the fact that it is written by a self-professed “lapsed” Mormon is even more telling. http://www.rolereboot.org/culture-and-politics/details/2012-01-mormon-men-and-an-ethic-of-care. I like this quote in particular:

    Quote:

Caring for people comes first and foremost in Mormon culture, and it is this principle in the Mormon curriculum that instructs the values of Mormon men. One Church authority, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, said “We all need each other, for it is in sacrificing our time, talents, and resources that our spirits mature and become refined.” In other words, Mormons are encouraged to care no matter what gender a member of the Church is; both genders are responsible for empathy and compassion.

I really liked that article when I read it and actually thought of posting it here.

Thanks, Gerald, for providing the link.

While I don’t hope to find perfection in the church for this, and still find there are opportunities I can be offended, I also am glad that this is taught and people strive for it, and are reminded of it often. Many members really are good-intentioned people. And I agree with Gerald that this is a good reason to stay.
