GuestThere used to be a series of monthly firesides in the D.C. area open to investigators and really any Church members. They were called “Why I believe.” I don’t know if this was regional or if it was a church-wide program. These were held at the Stake Center near the D.C. temple. I thought I could start doing these and call them “Why I Still Believe” (others are welcome to join in too).
Anyway, I would like to work on interviewing people (video, audio or written) who have managed to reconcile their faith and stay in the Church. I can think of a bunch of questions on my own, but I know there are other very smart people here.
Brainstorm questions you would like to answer if interviewed, or questions you think are good to ask interviewees.
Thanks for help!
My goal is to compile a somewhat standardized list of questions/topics so that the interviews have a small level of consistency (like a particular flavor more so than an precise formula or recipe).

Guest-Tell me about your life story. Did you grow up in the Church? Are you a convert? -What attracted you to the Church. What was your personal conversion like? [even BIC members have a point where they are converted]
-Have you had any special moments or spiritual experiences you would be comfortable sharing with others?
-How did you start to question your faith? What were the circumstances that lead to this? What was going on in your life?
-What are the hard topics for you to deal with? Why?
-What are the easy topics for you to deal with, these might be challenging to others? Why are these easier for you?
-What is your experience in Church when you attend on Sundays? Why do you go?
-What do you wish the Church did different?
-What do you think the Church is really good at?
[just some initial ideas]

Guest– What (ideas, methods, ??) helped you AFTER your crisis to turn toward embracing the church again? This is currently the majority of my focus. I love to hear different perspectives on this (where they exist). I hear a lot of strategy on how to smooth over the differences, I would like to hear more on how to actually become more unified again. I always say that I don’t expect to ‘return’ to a naive state, but I believe there is a way to progress to a higher level of unity in purpose and understanding.
I really hope this personal goal of mine is compatible with the mission of StayLDS (realizing that different people need to be helped at their own individual level) because I think there is a big and growing need for it. As John has stated before, WHERE can people tap into this type of experience/wisdom?

It most certainly is in line with the mission of this site. People will find a place to tap into experience and wisdom of staying, and pushing on through to faith again when people who want that get there. This is as good a vehicle as any to help find and deliver that wisdom.

GuestValoel – good questions. Are we posting answers here or opening to the external forum? November 3, 2008 at 2:27 pm #213681Anonymous

No answers here in this thread please. I was looking more to brainstorm questions first before I started working on some interviews. Other people think of different questions than I might, really good questions.

GuestFollow up questions to some above: -How do you deal with a couple of the challenging topics for you personally?
-How do you deal with a couple of the less challenging topics for you personally?
New Questions:
-What do you think about the statement “The Church is true?” What does that mean to you?
-What are some things that other members do that irritate you? How do you deal with those?
-Has anyone ever been unkind or insensitive to you? If so, how have you dealt with that?
-What callings have you enjoyed after your crisis? Which ones do you think would be difficult?

GuestMaybe something about the question of apathy vs. caring too much. Maybe something about the question of certainty vs. doubt. -
