Unfortunately I didn’t just make that up. I can’t say it’s a church-wide policy but I’ve heard anecdotal reports from enough missions to know it’s a thing.

In 1983, when I was in the MTC, we had tickets bought for us for the BYU-Utah football game. I am still appreciative of that. It was in Provo. Steve Young threw for about 9000 yards. BYU scored in the 50s. Looking back, and forward, for the time young men and women spend on missions, for the hardship they face at times, buying tickets for them to attend a BYU football game does not sound exorbitant. Nor should it be frowned on, in my opinion. Let them have a few hours of fun.

I have no problem with it, especially since I am 99.9% certain it was from a donation – but I would be fine with each mission paying for them to attend some popular social event as an entire mission every year to make sure everyone had at least one chance to participate.

As long as there were strict rules against any type of attempt to proselytize, it also would be good publicity.

Sure. But the if the were church funding an uncessary luxury like this is pretty bad look especially if church funds were being used. [they weren’t]

I didn’t serve a mission, so I never fully experienced the “hardship” missionaries go through/flex about. So I woldn’t understand or know.

And I’ll be the first to admit, I have a bit of an unfavorable view of byu and missionaries.
