This came up on the NOM board awhile back. I can’t put my finger on it, but I think there is something to the whole concept. There are just a plethora of NOMs/middle way/stayLDS folks from the Northwest.

Maybe it’s not so much there are more of us than other states…but considering the percentage of membership to NOMs…its just kind of weird. Reading the NOM board, it just seems that the Seattle/Portland areas and the Northwest in general is a pretty good breading ground for descent and dissatisfaction.

And now the influx of StayLDSers from Oregon lately.

Is it because of the prevalent liberal attitude? The crippling independence and stubbornness that make even running our local and state government almost impossible? The rain and gray skies that make us depressed all Winter – six months of the year? I don’t know. What? Any ideas? My immediate family hates Oregon…says it ruined me…changed me. They forget I’ve been here for almost 20 years. People DO CHANGE.

Anyway. For you new NW folks… jwald and I hope to see you Friday night in Corvallis. Go Beavers. I guess Sundance and mom3 aren’t going to make it down. That is too bad.

Did you get your PM church0333? I think John was going to PM you this morning as well?

Do you know how to check your PMs?

I think we are exposed to a lot of free thought…and I also think that our church organization tends to be overly conservative …. probably a reaction to the liberal environment

I’m not from the NW. But just a thought. I don’t think there is anything extraordinary about people LEAVING the church. That happens in places like Detroit and Dubuque, England and New England, Provo and Prague, New York and New Mexico, Cincinnati and Sin City… If there are unusual numbers of NOMs/StayLDSers/Middle-way-mormons in the NW, I think the question is why they STAY with the church after a faith crisis.

Now that is something to think about.

I too am from Oregon. I do believe that Oregon has a long history of tolerance. Portland made a stand for the chinese immigrants back in the day. Even going so far as saying that they would defend them with their very lives if necessary (very standard of liberty like) against the mobs that wanted to burn down their “chinatown” and expell them from the city (as had been done in several other western communities). More recently, I understand that Oregon has been a more accepting place for Gays. Perhaps this open environment is not the most fertile ground for the church. I seem to remember that the early missionaries to France had similar trouble. The people were overly willing to exchange ideas, but were almost impossible to nail down in the commitment to one viewpoint.
