I find two questions here. First, why would God give Men ( humanity) the priesthood. Secondly, why give men the priesthood and not women.

imho, we have the priesthood to better organize the church and formalize lines of authority. Do I think a man blessing my child is heard by God more strongly than a mother’s prayer? Nope. It does formalize the process of reaching out to our religious community for help. Involving other people in our trials is important for the community. Calling upon the priesthood is a communal 911 call.

Why don’t women have the priesthood? I think in order to have the priesthood, an individual has to have the potential to be a leader within a society, to move freely within a society, and to be able to equally speak her thoughts. Before birth control and modern conveniences, a woman did not have that opportunity — Unless she did not marry. Society is changing. Women are having more opportunities for leadership. Equal pay for equal work is happening. Education is happening. Many women out-earn their husbands. Eventually, I believe priesthood will happen for women too.

Amen, DancingCarrot. I actually think that is a core component of Mormon theology.

Thanks for your input, amateurparent. I think there is a lot of good that can come from looking at things historically, and I agree that changing roles in society motivate changing roles in sub-sets of society. The LDS Church is no different in that regard – and I am not dismissing the idea of revelation in saying that. The tree gets pruned as it is ready to handle the pruning.

Does God really give authority or is it like a simulator to practice with? I get the sense it is not the real thing since he always can say no. We can bind on earth and in heaven when we do his will. If it is not his will we have no promise. The good people are not thrown out of God’s presence, just the temporal church.

If anything, we all have a little embryonic power (the slot experiment shows we can alter mater with our expectations) and occasionally God gives that a boost for us.

As for ministering angels: I understood angels to be of 2 types: redirected or not yet born. The resurrected ones won’t go to nursery. They were good enough to not have that problem.
