Yeah, I’ve heard that called the platinum rule. ;)

Thanks for coming back around Pete. I was definitely wary from your initial post, but now I see where you are coming from. I have been in some wards that are truly like Zion on earth. I would even venture a guess that the percent that are Zion-like is more than half, or it has been in my experience. Do I believe people whose experience is totally different from that? Yep. You bet I do. The church experience is very local, and maybe it’s like the tagline: Mormonism is the worst religion except for all the others.

Isn’t there an inherent problem with the phrase:

“Winning back those who quit the church”?

Winning is an interesting choice of words. To have them join our team is a “win” only if we are competing against others, right? Or if we view our way as the only way and we “win” when more numbers affirm our belief. But it doesn’t look at if it is a “win” for them, only for us.

“Quit the church” is also interesting choice of words. No longer attending or participating with callings and quitting to be a part of the flock does not really say much about what is happening inside the individual, only the choice made to quit, and only referring to a specific outward visible action like church attendance or participation. But there could be a myriad of reasons why that choice is made, and as Pres Uchtdorf teached it doesn’t always translate to they are lazy or don’t try enough or care enough.

If the view was on what the individual needs to be happy, the win would be their peace and happiness…regardless of where they stand or what actions we see.

What if they are truly happy, and engaged in good things like community service, and smiling and cheerful and productive in society? Is that a loss unless they come to church with us on Sunday?

Just some thoughts as I read through this thread.
