    StayLDS moderators,

    I’m working on a few StayLDS-related projects:

    1) Reworking the “How to stay” essay — potentially into book format

    2) Creating a new combined PowerPoint/Audio presentation (like my “Why people leave…” presentation) to support people right when they first hit the wall/struggle. There is a HUGE need for this right now.

I would love help from some of you as co-collaborators if are available. I will be editing the documents via Dropbox, so please join up if you are interested:

    https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTM1NjM2MzQ5

Then shoot me an email, and I’ll provide you access to the folder.

Final plea: I have come to feel pretty strongly that Audio, Video, and Books (along w/ Blogs and Forums, which we already have covered) are our best hope at reaching the masses. Please consider joining with me (if you’re comfortable) to start moving even more in this direction.

    Love you all.

    John Dehlin

I’m in. My account is under Old-Timer, and the e-mail address is curtisraydegraw@yahoo.com. You’ll have to be patient with me, since I have no idea how to use DropBox.

    John,

I’d love to help. I’m downloading dropbox right now.

Of course, I like to help semi-anonymously, so I signed up as mormonheretic@gmail.com

I’ve never seen dropbox so that would be a learning curve, I wish I had more time. I like the idea.

John, I have been thinking about something along the lines of your essay into a book for a long time. I know I always wish for the impossible, but I would love a book that works something like the young lady/old hag painting that Bushman refers to. A masterpiece that faithfuls would read and see the “young lady” that they expect, and maybe take nothing else from it. Stage 4s would see the “old hag” and be their stage 4 selves. Others may see how both exist at the same time – and take something valuable away.

I would love, love, LOVE to see a work like that! I think it can be done, but I know it is NO easy task. I guess I just hate divisions, I hate fences. People may want to condemn me for “sitting on the fence” but I’m not just sitting, I’m trying to bring it down.

Orson – that is a terrific idea!

OK, now that I’m back on terra firma (or at least back in the US), I can help on essays & so forth, but my travel schedule in the coming year is getting crazier and crazier. There’s no way I can do some of the other types of projects mentioned (e.g. podcast, video, interviews, etc.). I’m going to have to do what I can do on my own time and terms unfortunately. Got to bring home that bacon and fry it up in a pan.

I think several of us could use some sort of Dropbox for Dummies tutorial.

    Dropbox for dummies:

    1) Install the dropbox software on each/any/all machines you use (mac or pc work fine….not sure about linux)

    2) Create an account for yourself w/ Dropbox (online), and log in using your dropbox software on each machine (it should stay active from them on, each time you log in)

    3) Dropbox acts just like a regular file folder….with the added benefits of:

    a) Allowing you to access the file folder from anywhere you have internet access, and

    b) Allowing you to share the file folder w/ others, to collaborate with them on documents

It’s kinda like a wiki that allows you to use Microsoft Word or Powerpoint to edit the documents. You can use it for your personal documents (like as a backup) as well. Also, the more people you share it with, the more space they give you (I think I’m up to 3 or 4 gigs at this point).

The only catch is that multiple people cannot edit the document simultaneously, so that must be coordinated (probably through email?).

    Does that help?

Anyway….I would love to see if we could collaborate on our first book and multimedia presentation together. Dropbox would be the mechanism for that.

    What do ya’ll think?

I’m in, but my time in the next few months will be a little limited – since Jan-Mar is the crazy time in college admissions. I also will be buying a new computer in the very near future, and I’m going to wait to install the software until I have a dedicated, private computer to use. (issues of protection from seven-to-fourteen-year-old naivete affecting my computer)

I’ve installed it, but there are no files there. Are there supposed to be some files that someone created?

    Orson,

We gotta write that book. I think this might be a good way…….

Let me know if/when you want to chat by phone to discuss.

John, I agree – to write that book. This may be the best way for me to communicate right now.

There are so many directions it could go. Do you have a specific purpose – to aim it directly on “how to stay LDS” like the essay? Or would you want to have another main point with this as a secondary? (Historical issues etc. – for example Bennion’s book “Religion and the Pursuit of Truth” tackles the faith vs. science debate, and offers reconciliation strategies.)

Perhaps it would be helpful to brainstorm some possible directions before narrowing down sub-topics and content?

    Orson,

A few book ideas that I know there is an audience for are:

    1) Why people leave the LDS church (to build empathy and understanding. This will be something exmos and postmos give family and friends)

    2) How to help your LDS marriage survive a faith crisis (something that helps couples work through the crisis together)

    3) How to stay in the LDS church after a crisis of faith (e.g. how to get to Fowler Stage 5)

My guess is that 1 will be more popular than 2, and that 2 will be more popular than 3.

Do you have other ideas for book titles? Let’s pick the right first book title, and go from there.

I think #1 would be a good foundation for 2, and then 2 for 3….but that’s just my gut.

Thanks John, I clicked on the invitation, and I’ll work on it when I have time.
