    Wow…talk about subject drift….

I think the “Most wars are about religion” is one of those knee jerk comments without merit…..now if you want to say most wars are about ideology then you would be accurate….

Religious wars: Crusades, Irish/Catholic conflict, Iran vs Iraq, Israel vs {insert arab country here}, a few other small conflicts.

Ideology: Chairman Mao’s little china uprising, Civil war, Revolutionary war, WW1, WW2, Gulf War 1 and 2, Vietnam, Korea, Serbs vs croats, Afghanistan vs Russia, USSR vs Europe, French Revolution, etc

Generally I agree but greed and power are factors.

Subject drift? No, I think if you’re dancing with death an afterlife is important.

I never said most wars are caused by religion, only that most people starting wars are religious. It’s easy to trace it back to a particular religion if you’d like and it is always some kind of influence. Do you really think Hitler was targeting a particular religious group for non-religious reasons? But it was definitely not a large Christian church backing his actions, so do you blame it on the Christians or on a crazy guy who was raised Christian? I would say the latter.

stands to reason, most folk in the world are religious and a hundred years ago most people in the west were. Religion was co-opted to justify territorial expansion (Japan), the love of money (In God we trust), now we invoke freedom and democracy in land grabs.

By the way, Hitler was nominally Christian for political purposes; in private he said otherwise. He and a lot of other Nazis were involved in occultism, proto-New Age so called neopaganism.

And Christians have killed millions and enslaved more over the past 2000 years. Every group has good and bad. Because they claim a belief in god does not give them the moral high ground they just think it does.

Christians also outlawed slavery. To my knowledg no other group ever did that.

Stalin starve 20 million for communism…puts the ideology folks way ahead. Add Chairman Mao and Pol Pot and it will take a while for the religions to catch up on the slaughter scale.

Hitler…he did not use religion as a basis for the jews. If you are going to somehow say the fact that “most wars are fought by people who were raised in a religion” as some kind of pertinent fact then you might as well say “most wars were fought by people with shoes”.

Nearly everyone in modern history (lets just say 4000 years or so) have been associated with some type of religion (counting paganism and the ideas of Emperor/Gods)

Shoes and religion are not the same. One teaches you a code of behavior and belief and frames how you see the world. Shoes just keep your feet from getting sore. Not a good analogy.

Wow…can’t think it through eh? Didn’t say they were the same. The point is that everyone has a religious belief of some type. So let’s say this…everyone also has a brain so brains cause all war. The fact that everyone has downing common has no direct correlation with the evil they do. Most conscripts in war fight because they are pressed into the service.

You seem to be arguing in favor of the point I originally made. I essentially said that while many wars and atrocities are committed by religiously influenced people, it is hard to trace it back to the actual religion causing the acts. I’m not really interested in arguing about whether you like a phrase I typed when taken out of context.

johnh, watch it. We don’t insult each other here, no matter what – at least not that directly and intentionally. It’s one of our base rules.
