I think JS and polygamy is a storm in a tea cup. The black priesthood ban is the real issue, and much more disturbing.

Marital abuse is an issue, in and out of polygamy.

polygamy and gay marriage often get thrown about in the same conversations, and I can kind of see why. If you are going to stray from the one man and one woman traditional marriage view, then really how can you logically deny marriage between any combination of consenting adults?

Agreed absolutely. A hundred-fifty years ago the mormons stood up to the government and argued that the constitution allowed them the right to define what married meant to them, and that all people had that same “liberty.” Today, — we are involved in the politics where we want the church to define what the constitution means FOR EVERYONE when it comes to marriage. This is not lost on many people, and they have a right to criticize the church and the whole Prop 8 deal. Rather than get involved in prop 8, IMO, the church should have stayed out of it at the very least, but I think they should be saying that even though they disagree with the practice, everyone has a constitutional right to define what it means to them — just like we were fighting 150 years ago. That would have been the right thing to do. WE have gone from libertarian focused, to authoritarian focused.

A hundred-fifty years ago, us good “libertarians” would have rallied around the church stance on the constitution and marriage, whether we were members, or polygamist, or not.

    Today, its an embarrassment.

I’m reminded of a phrase I once heard about treason. Two people met in a French prison and one had been imprisoned for being in favor of Napoleon. The other one was imprisoned for being against him. Their conclusion? “In the end, treason is simply a matter of dates”.

I think that’s true about Church doctrine as well, particularly those doctrines that are in conflict with deeply held feelings in society. “In the end, heresy and perceived truth is simply a matter of dates”.

Great quote! I think it can easily be expanded to geography, race and gender as well. I would imagine the Russians have a different account of the Cold War in their history books than us Americans, for example, and it isn’t incorrect.
