No, but it was common on my mission, and by mission rules — considered against the WoW in the 70s. Looking up on Wikipedia, I found the following interesting comment about Yerba Mate:

    Wikipedia wrote:

Mate consumption is associated with oral cancer esophagus cancer, cancer of the larynx, and squamous cell of the head and neck. The mechanism is believed to be due to the effect of high consumption temperature, rather than due to any innate properties of mate as a beverage.

A study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer showed a limited correlation between oral cancer and the drinking of large quantities of “hot mate”. Smaller quantities (less than 1 liter daily) were found to increase risk only slightly, though alcohol and tobacco consumption had a synergistic effect on increasing oral, throat, and esophageal cancer. The study notes the possibility that the increased risk, rather than stemming from the mate itself, could be credited to the high (near-boiling) temperatures at which the mate is consumed in its most traditional way, the chimarrão. The cellular damage caused by thermal stress could lead the esophagus and gastric epithelium to be metaplasic, adapting to the chronic injury. Then, mutations would lead to cellular dysplasia and to cancer. While the IARC study does not specify a specific temperature range for “hot mate”, it lists general (not “hot”) mate drinking separately, but does not possess the data to assess its effect. It also does not address, in comparison, any effect of consumption temperature with regard to coffee or tea.

While the last statement leaves aside “coffee and tea” as hot drinks, it certainly indicts drinking hot Yerba Mate as being carcinogenic when consumed at an injurious temperature. This explanation of the mechanism of injury, and how it causes cancer, I found fascinating.

My experience is that it’s “earthy”. As in i can really taste the earth its grown in. 🙂 I’m not a huge fan unless i sweeten it to no end. Im sure the taste can be acquired though. And its one of few teas/tisanes that contains caffeine and isnt against current wow policy.

Hipsters like it because it’s sold organic and supposedly helps save the rainforest but I don’t know how having a yerba mate plantation take up space in south America helps save the rainforest.

I tend to hate on hipsters though. But in fairness I was hating on hipsters before it was cool… :ugeek:

Redbush is great, it’s like having pleasant tea without the side effects. Anti-oxidants too.

Redbush + lemon, redbush + vanilla are good too. And strangely good with soy milk (which I’m not a huge fan of otherwise)

I have been drinking Yerba lately, I find it really nice brewed with a fruity tea, and real nice when this combo is iced.

It does have some caffeine in it, my brand had about 2/3 what a coffee would, but diluting it as described above weakens it. Unlike coffee it is an alkaline which is good for you and Is packed with lots of vitamins and minerals. I think the compatibility of this with the WOW depends on your personal view of caffeine. I figure this is a way better option to drink cold than soda, despite whether that soda has caffeine or not.

Personally I find mate to be too bitter and dry tasting, and I’m not exactly encouraged by the oral cancer stuff above. I found it a bit like drinking leaf litter!

I believe the oral cancer issues are common with all hot drinks, even hit water. Hot liquids burn and that damaged tissue becomes susceptible to cancer.

Maybe Joseph Smith was on to something…

Depends how hot they are. I’ve never liked my drinks really hot, it hurts my mouth and throat!

I was reading about yerba mate once and was surprised many people considered it to cause cancer. Upon further study the mechanism is generally believed to be the incredibly high temperature (160f, ~71c) that it’s consumed at rather than any property of the leaves themselves.

I believe the hottest beverage I’ve ever had was sold at Temple Square when they had the christmas lights up a couple months ago. That very hot chocolate burned my tongue with the first sip and I swear I couldn’t taste for days…. thanks Nauvoo Café. :|

Since joining the church I’ve kept it to herbal tea, water, and soda…mostly like coke zero, etc. …I also try to keep the calories down. Since I drank a lot of alcohol before converting I avoid anything like that even in n/a form. I was told that was frowned upon anyway by the church. I guess I could see why depending on your point of view. Is there a lot of Saints that drink n/a beer, and – or virgin daiquiris, margarita’s etc? Just curious. The Rooibis Red tea is very good. I really enjoy that with a little fresh ginger in it. Very nice. Alcohol was the only real WOW concession I needed to make when joining the church. No tobacco or drugs for me anyway at that point, so what I’ve heard is one of the biggest obstacles for converts was actually a welcomed change for me :) .

I would say N/As are a grey area I’d rather not be clarified ;) They technically have a little alcohol left. My home teachers always drank them when I was a kid. My dad even drank them occasionally back when he thought caffeine was from Satan. So maybe I’m a special case. I almost never see anyone with them here in Utah though. But N/As taste horrible and I wouldn’t expect anyone to like them if they hadn’t acquired the taste for beer from the real thing.

Virgin drinks are expensive slushies. Nothing wrong except I still get charged the same as a regular one half the time. Occasionally they forget to make it virgin though.

I think with both of these you should probably avoid them if you had a drinking problem. Anything that reminds you of your addiction is bad. I don’t know if that was your situation but that’s not a WoW thing. It’s common sense. :)

But I think you already knew that. At this point I don’t dare drink the real thing out of fear I’ll realize how poor my substitutes are… :lolno:

My wife, my kids and I LOVE virgin strawberry daquiris – all of us, including my 10-year-old. I also enjoy a good gin and tonic, minus the gin. 👿

I have had some members call drinks like that bad because of “the appearance of evil” – so I grin (or laugh, depending on the person) and explain how badly that verse is butchered so often in Christianity, as a whole, and the LDS Church, as well.

I disagree NA lager is much much better than it used to be.

As for trace alcohol, you can find it in many things like sacrament bread, vinegar and slightly off fruit juice. Fermentation is a natural process.

What is Coke Zero by the way? Or Pepsi Max? I see them for sale but am confused by them…

They are examples of drinks invented by Lucifer’s more evil twin brother.

Better yes…. Good….ehh… but I never liked lagers all that much anyways. I saw a couple new ones at a store I don’t usually go to. I’ll have to review them. :)

I don’t have a problem with trace alcohol. I can feel it though. Or maybe its placebo. Either way I like it…

Coke zero and Pepsi max are diet drinks that ostensibly taste better than the old diet drinks. Pepsi max has 2x caffeine too. Neither taste great…or good…or like something I would put in my body. Even the worst NA lagers taste better haha.

I’ve been making iced redbush tea this week as my main drink. And I’ve given up soda. I have to say I feel amazing after just a few days.
