GuestHave any of you ever considered writing for the Ensign? Or do you know anyone that has? I know hawkgrrrl does a fair amount of writing. I often talk about how much I appreciate the ‘pure mormonism’ that is burried inside the culture and handbooks. That’s what I want to see come through. I was chatting recently with my Mum and she agreed that the Ensign seems to have been dumbed down a lot in the past decade and wished there were more thought provoking articles available.
I agreed… and then decided that the only way anything would happen would be if those who care enough do something about it.
The Ensign is largely based on submitted articles. If the only people submitting are writing from a different ‘paradigm’ then they’re the only people that will be published and get a voice.
Here’s the submission guide:
http://www.lds.org/gospellibrary/pdf/EnsignWG.pdf I enjoy writing and although not an expert feel there’s a fair amount I could do with the research and perspectives I’ve reached in the last year or two.
But if other experience suggests it’s an inpenetrable fortress then maybe I should just continue writing/blogging for personal consumption.

GuestThanks, mackay11. I have been told over thye years I should submit a few things I’ve written, but I’ve never done so. Maybe I should.

GuestI have heard that the process involves a HEAVY level of editing/revision where they ask you to rework a section and resubmit – then repeat. September 30, 2013 at 3:44 pm #274330Anonymous
GuestIt’s an interesting suggestion. Truth be told, I quit reading it years ago because it is so heavily correlated I never really enjoy it. Also, I wish they hadn’t done this: “Queries for “I Have a Question.” This department has been discontinued. Instead of writing to the magazine staff with your doctrinal or personal questions, please counsel with your local priesthood leader.” I think I can see why they did it (some of the answers they published in the past no longer hold up), but this just exacerbates the problem because instead people will get countless wrong answers. GuestA woman in our ward was published in this month’s Ensign (“Learning to Trust in the Lord”). She said that she submitted the article in the 80’s (there are references to infant children and they are empty nesters now) and had forgotten about the submission. I can’t imagine that her story is representative of the norm but it does make me wonder… September 30, 2013 at 5:48 pm #274332Anonymous
GuestThanks all. Interesting that it took so long Roy. It does say in the guidelines that it might take months or years to be used, if at all.
There’s a part of me that wonders: ‘why bother,’ but I know I want to see the church membership change in outlook. Although the article might never be published or might be correlated to being unrecognisable by the time it was published I at least want to try.

GuestOut of interest Hawkgrrrl, if I wanted to submit something for BCC or W&T, how would I do that? I’ve no presumption that it would be used, but interested to know all the same. Maybe that’s a better option. September 30, 2013 at 6:50 pm #274334Anonymous
GuestI would be ecstatic if Ray or hawkgrrrl or mackay or many others here could get articles into the Ensign. It is really sad these days. I can only imagine the “issues” involved in putting it out, but right now it’s like ice cream that’s sat in the car and melted, gone into the freezer, come back out and sat on the counter, stuck back in the freezer. . . . No thanks. -
